Route Services is a division of Network Rail that provides the Routes with services so they can help Network Rail deliver a better railway for a better Britain. We support the Routes with a myriad of services and supplies they need to maintain and operate the railway. See the diagram for a breakdown of our services. To learn more, please watch our video.
This role sits within Supply Chain Operations (SCO), an area of the business which supplies and delivers the logistics, materials, components, rail and road fleet that enable the maintenance and renewal of the railway.
SCO keeps the materials, machinery and components required by its customers moving – making sure they are on-site when needed so work can go ahead as planned and on schedule.
About the role (External)
Reporting to the Head of Production and Optimisation, you will deliver a proactive and improvement-driven approach ensuring the effective management and control of all production and operational performance of the depot, and will be responsible for leading a multidisciplinary team to ensure safety, reliability, and efficiency across all depot activities, including facilities management, rail vehicle shunting, and multiple stakeholder management.
The Production Services function specialises in the manufacture and distribution of railway materials and plays an integral role in the Network Rail Route Services supply chain. The role is accountable for delivering excellent customer service safely, compliantly, and sustainably.
This is a great opportunity for someone passionate about delivering change through continuous improvement in a fast, dynamic environment with 46 regional operational locations engaged in manufacturing, material handling, and rolling stock maintenance activities.
The role may involve travel to other locations up to 5 days per month.
Key accountabilities include:
- Provide operational safety leadership on Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) matters related to operational and engineering facilities, focusing on current legislation such as PUWER, LOLER, and H&S Management regulations, promoting best practices and lessons learned to develop a safety-focused culture in line with Network Rail Standards.
- Lead multiple facilities within a geographical location, developing resourcing, planning, and delivery of engineering works and depot operations to meet customer requirements safely.
- Manage the safe system of work for all operational areas, including planning and logistical arrangements for site access to protect staff, contractors, and visitors.
- Develop, implement, and review operational and engineering facilities strategies, overseeing safe systems of work and aligning them with business goals.
- Define strategic facilities plans, developing assurance protocols, competence management systems, and processes compliant with H&S legislation, company procedures, and industry standards.
- Lead continuous improvement programs across multiple supply chain-operated facilities to enhance efficiency and service delivery, incorporating process improvements and modern strategies for business continuity.
- Manage communication strategies to maintain positive relations with customers, suppliers, and internal departments.
- Drive sustainable facilities management and operational best practices, capturing lessons learned and delivering efficiencies across production and engineering operations.
- Lead relationships with internal stakeholders and external suppliers, fostering a positive safety culture and performance.
The ideal candidate will have experience of the following:
- Facilities management experience
- Relevant safety qualification, e.g., NEBOSH General Certificate or equivalent
- Proven experience in a railway-focused engineering environment
- Successful team management record
- Good commercial awareness
- Ability to lead and motivate compliance with H&S regulations such as CDM and COSHH
- Knowledge of technical, quality, environmental, and sustainability standards
- Experience in railway or similar engineering environments
- Excellent communication and motivation skills
- Willingness to drive change and learn
- Knowledge of computer systems (desirable)
- Working towards a professional engineering qualification
