Job summary

COWI is seeking a Senior Engineer to join our Tunnels and underground structures discipline in the UK. You will design and review complex underground projects, lead design teams and coordinate with clients, contractors and stakeholders to deliver safe, sustainable solutions.

You are chartered with ICE or IStructE and have extensive tunnel experience, including bored tunnels and temporary works. UK standards, Eurocodes and CDM knowledge are essential for this role.

Qualifications

  • Chartered engineer with ICE or IStructE membership.
  • Extensive tunnel and heavy civil underground structures design experience.
  • Proven track record in bored tunnels, mined excavations, stations and temporary works.
  • Knowledge of soil-structure interaction; experience with Lusas/Strand7, SAP2000 and Plaxis.
  • Experience in guiding and coordinating project teams.
  • Familiar with UK design standards, Eurocodes and CDM regulations.
  • Strong understanding of CDM regulations and UK standards.

  • Conduct feasibility studies and options reports for tunnel projects.
  • Prepare designs for a range of underground structures and foundations.
  • Provide work for CAD Technicians and review drawings.
  • Perform site surveys and appraisals for rail, water, or utilities schemes.
  • Supervise Graduate Engineers and check project drawings.
  • Liaise with clients, attend on-site and design review meetings.
  • Manage project cost and commercial aspects; assist tenders and fee proposals.
  • Contribute to pre-qualification documents and bids.

To further expand our Tunnels and underground structures discipline, we are looking for a Senior Engineer to join us. Working on tunnels and underground structure design, you’ll have the opportunity to work on some of the most prestigious infrastructure projects in the UK.

Responsibilities
  • Conducting feasibility and options reports
  • Completing designs for a range of civil engineering structures, including below ground structures and foundations
  • Preparation of work for CAD Technicians
  • Site surveys and appraisals of various rail, water and/or utilities infrastructure schemes as appropriate
  • Checking of drawings and supervision of Graduate Engineers
  • Liaising with clients, attending meetings on-site, progress meetings and design review meetings
  • Project management, including cost/commercial aspects of project
  • Assisting in the production of pre-qualification documents, tenders and fee proposals as required

Qualifications
  • Be Chartered in either the ICE or IStructE or an equivalent institution
  • Have significant experience working on the design of tunnels, heavy civil and other complex underground structures
  • Demonstrate a proven record in the design of bored tunnels, mined excavations, stations, basements, and temporary works
  • Have knowledge of soil structure interaction principles and their application both in structural analysis (Lusas, Strand7, SAP 2000) and geotechnical analysis (Plaxis)
  • Have some experience of motivating, supervising, and coordinating project teams
  • Be familiar with UK design standards, Eurocodes and CDM regulations
  • Sound understanding of the CDM Regulations and be fully conversant with UK standards
