Job Title: Senior Engineer

Advertised Salary: £44,750 - £50,750 depending on experience) + car cash allowance (£4,680 p.a.) + benefits

Location: Remote, with regular travel across our North West, West Midlands & London networks required.

We are a team of engineers and technicians that design and/or manage the design of repairs on a diverse range of our historical assets to keep our canals open and alive. We provide the designs of technical solutions, preparing specifications and briefing documents for our direct labour force, external contractors, and consultants. Our works are focussed on conserving and enhancing our precious waterways for future generations.

Our role is to provide designs to maintain, repair and rebuild the Charitys infrastructure to enable visitors to safely enjoy our canals and rivers, and safeguard them for future generations. Our aim is to develop efficient and innovative engineering solutions to the multitude of challenges we face maintaining our waterways and infrastructure day to day.

Our Operations Directorate includes reactive maintenance teams who need engineering advice to deal with the repairs needed to keep the canals operational day to day. We are looking for 2 Senior Engineers on a 1 year fixed term/secondment basis to provide this support.

Specifically, this role will:

  • Provide the needed engineering support, our operations and Reactive teams.
  • Investigate, develop and specify cost effective engineering and construction solutions ensuring best value, considering user requirements and whole life costs.
  • Design and specify engineering solutions and where required, act as Principal Designer and/or Designer for works in accordance with CDM 2015.
  • Provide designs for the maintenance, repair and renewal works delivered by our teams and external Contractors, taking account of, all statutory, technical, operational and customer requirements.
  • Be technical advisors to the Charity’s internal construction functions, agreeing standards and specifications.
  • Where required, provide temporary works designs for works delivered by the Charity’s internal construction teams.

Location & coverage

Our Engineer vacancy will be offered on a remote working basis, with a requirement to attend our main hub spaces as and when required for team working and collaborative meetings. Travel throughout the regional waterway network will also be expected to enable site visits and meetings.

Relevant Hubs: Ellesmere Port, Burnley, Newark, Birmingham, Hatton (Warwick), Fenton (Stoke on Trent), Milton Keynes.

Knowledge, Skills/Qualifications & Experience

Our Engineers are important to the success of the Canal & River Trust. The role will involve designing and contributing to the planning of repairs on a diverse range of historical assets associated with the canal network. As one of our civil engineers you will complete designs of technical solutions, preparing specifications and briefing documents for our in-house construction teams.

These are extremely varied, interesting and challenging roles. Whether you are coordinating with stakeholders, delivering innovative solutions, helping to define standards and procedures, or working with our teams on the ground; you will be working to conserve and enhance our navigable waterways for future generations; keeping our canals open and alive.

Key accountabilities:

  • Development of simple designs to address defects using existing standard solutions, and bespoke solutions to more complex defects and engineering issues.
  • Investigate and develop cost effective design and construction solutions ensuring best value, considering user requirements and whole life costs.
  • Design and specify engineering solutions as Designer for works in accordance with CDM 2015.
  • Provide design support for the maintenance and repair works delivered by the Charity’s internal teams taking account of all statutory, technical, operational and customer requirements.
  • Accountable for engaging and briefing Principal Engineers, relevant stakeholders and offering specialists advice, when risks require greater consideration.
  • Work within a team of Engineers and other technical specialists to design and specify engineering solutions.
  • Contribute to the development and the implementation of Design Guidance, Standards and Specifications.
  • Provide temporary works designs to support works delivered by our internal construction teams.

About you

Technical:

  • Incorporated/Chartered Engineer or equivalent professional qualification.
  • Membership of relevant professional body at an appropriate level e.g. MICE.
  • Experience of civil engineering design, and construction.
  • Experience of designing Temporary Works solutions.
  • Knowledge and understanding of historic infrastructure and the natural environment.
  • Able to negotiate with internal and external contacts and support other areas of the business in an appropriate manner, taking account of overall business priorities and resources as appropriate.

General:

  • Experience of working within a diverse and multi-disciplined project team.
  • Able to effectively communicate with internal and external contacts, in writing and in person at meetings.
  • Good standard of written and verbal communication and proven ability to present technical data to technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Proficient in the use of business software e.g. MS Office. Experience of using GIS or mapping systems.
  • Confirmation of right to work in the UK (without sponsorship).
  • Valid driving licence and access to a vehicle as your work will require you to reach locations not easily accessible by public transport.
