This job is brought to you by Jobs/Redefined, the UK's leading over-50s age inclusive jobs board.

The Role

We have an exciting new opportunity to shape future Power Electronics and Control Solutions within the Research & Development function at Edwards, part of the Atlas Copco Group. The role reports into the Technology Manager for Motors and Drives and is part of the larger Software, Electronics and Motors Technology Team.

You will join a dynamic and progressive technology team with a diverse range of skills, working in research and development of innovative solutions to enhance Atlas Copco products. You will design and develop power circuits for motor drives and other electrical power applications. You will continuously learn about new technologies in the broad fields of devices, circuits, methods and applications related to control of electrical power in the 30W to 30kW range, increasing the overall scope of knowledge within the team and wider organisation.

Main Responsibilities

• Keep our customers happy by using your knowledge and experience to develop new solutions that address complex problems and/or demonstrate significant improvement over existing solutions: e.g. innovative features, better quality, reliability, deployment, security or usability, higher performance, lower cost, etc.

• Work with teams of passionate mechanical, electrical, electronic and software engineers in the Vacuum Technique Technology Group (VTTG) to deliver creative ideas and innovative software for new technology projects

• Be part of the team that ensures our Technology Roadmap remains fresh and briming with interesting projects. Technologies include electromagnetics, sensors, analogue and power electronics, thermal and EMC solutions, microcontrollers, embedded software, motor and electrical power control, condition monitoring, predictive maintenance and more.

• Proactively grow knowledge of components, circuits, products, applications, standards and intellectual property (IP) and how they are being used in key industries: e.g. vacuum, compressors, automotive / transportation, industrial control & monitoring, instrumentation & measurement, medical and agricultural.

• Clearly document and communicate all aspects of work across the full life-cycle of technology development and delivery; including roadmaps, NTV proposals, concepts, detailed designs, test results, IP, application notes, commercial propositions, final reports, project plans and status etc.

What we expect from you

Bachelor or higher-level degree in electrical or electronic engineering or a STEM subject.

Minimum of three years hands-on electronics design and development, ideally in industrial engineering or R&D applications.

Ideally, you will have solid experience with:

• Design tools for schematic capture, circuit and system simulation

• Classical control & discrete time control

• Thermal management theory and practice

• Power electronic design and development

• Analogue electronics for signal conditioning

• Digital design with micro controllers

• Standards for electrical product safety and EMC

• Working knowledge of EMC

• Use of electrical test and measurement equipment

• Preparation of specifications and test reports.
