Job summary

RNLI is seeking a Senior Engineer in Poole to lead marine electrical and electronic systems for lifeboats and related equipment. You will ensure compliant design, integration and operational support across projects, working with engineers, suppliers and crews.

The role requires delivering technical outputs, investigations, and performance improvements while maintaining safety and reliability for lifesaving operations.

Qualifications

• Experience in marine electrical/electronic systems engineering or closely related role.
• Good IT skills: Excel, Word; familiarity with CAD/system documentation tools is beneficial.
• Engineering qualification and progress toward Incorporated/Chartered Engineer status.

Responsibilities

• Ensure design, integration and support of marine electrical/electronic systems per RNLI standards.
• Conduct technical investigations, fault finding, trials and analysis on electrical/electronic systems.
• Produce and review technical outputs: system requirements, drawings, installation guidance, specifications, test plans.

We’re recruiting for a Senior Engineer to join the Engineering team and provide marine electrical and electronic engineering expertise for new and existing RNLI assets and associated equipment, supporting our crews, lifeboat stations and coastal operations.

Your role

You will focus on the marine electrical and electronic systems that keep our lifeboats, lifeguard fleet and associated equipment safe, reliable and ready for service. Key areas include:

• Ensuring the design, integration and support of marine electrical and electronic systems, equipment and procedures are developed in accordance with RNLI Engineering Processes and Standards.
• Undertaking technical investigations, fault finding, trials and analysis across electrical and electronic systems.
• Producing and reviewing technical outputs such as system requirements, electrical drawings, installation guidance, specifications, test plans and supporting engineering documentation.
• Working with Engineering & Supply delivery teams, project managers, suppliers and operational colleagues to deliver practical marine electrical/electronics solutions to agreed timescales.
• Supporting research, development and improvement projects involving onboard systems, communications, navigation, power distribution, control systems and related marine technologies.

About you

You’ll be a strong team player with practical marine electrical and/or electronics experience, able to problem solve, fault find and think analytically while managing a demanding workload with changing priorities. You’ll work across the organisation and with external suppliers, helping us deliver safe, reliable, innovative and cost-effective engineering solutions for lifesaving operations. To be considered you will need:

• Experience relevant to the appropriate grade in marine electrical, marine electronics, electrical/electronic systems engineering, or a closely related engineering role.
• Good IT skills, including Microsoft Office, Excel and Word; experience with electrical design tools, CAD packages or system documentation tools would be beneficial.

• Engineering qualification equivalent to the England, Wales & Northern Ireland qualification level 6 as defined by UK government, or at level 5 with proven additional experience.
• Able to demonstrate working towards and an expectation to achieve Engineering Council registration at Incorporated / Chartered Engineer level.
• A good understanding of spoken and written English.
