Job summary

BakerHicks in the United Kingdom is seeking a Senior Engineer – Bridges to lead design and assessment on highway and rail projects. You will bring Chartered status and a track record of delivering medium-scale bridge works within client teams and multi-disciplinary groups.

You will mentor Early Careers engineers, manage small packages, and ensure high-quality outputs, compliance with CDM, Eurocodes, and Network Rail standards.

Qualifications

  • Degree qualified in Civil and/or Structural Engineering (or equivalent).
  • Considerable bridge engineering design, technical detailing and specification writing experience.
  • Experience delivering multi-disciplinary BakerHicks projects across several sectors.
  • Eligibility to pass security clearance for sensitive projects.
  • Full clean UK driving license.
  • Knowledge of CDM regulations, British Standards and Eurocodes.

Responsibilities

  • Provide bridge engineering design and consultancy services on behalf of BakerHicks under guidance.
  • Undertake bridge design and assessment calculations and structural analysis.
  • Produce bridge design deliverables (drawings, specs, reports), site surveys, construction duties, client liaison and project management.
  • Check calculations and drawings to meet quality and compliance against project brief.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary design team to deliver safe, buildable solutions.
  • Contribute to enquiry plans, tender reviews, fee estimates, scopes of work and change controls.
  • Provide feedback on department performance from technical and operational perspectives.
  • Review subcontractors' production calculations and drawings for design intent compliance.

Job description

As a Senior Engineer – Bridges,you are expected to have a strong track record in bridge engineering in one or, preferably, multiple sectors that BakerHicks operates in.You will ideally be a Chartered Engineer with experience of working on a variety of medium-size projects and possibly managing small packages on large projects. You’ll be part of an enthusiastic and committed team of Engineers and Technicians to deliver high-quality output on projects.

Client care and repeat business is crucial to BakerHicks success, so you’ll need to be able to develop and nurture relationships with our clients (both internal and external).

Key Purpose

  • Structural design and specification of all aspects of bridge works in accordance with current guidelines, standards, regulations and project deliverables.
  • Contribute to the development and mentoring of our Early Careers population and the continuous improvement of departmental capabilities.
  • On occasion, manage our bridgesinvolvementin small to medium-size projects, including time, cost, quality and client relationship management and delivery.

Champion quality and compliance controls within local teams and projects.

Responsibilities

  • Provide bridge engineering design and consultancy services on behalf of BakerHicks under the direction of the line manager or project lead.
  • Undertake bridge design and assessment calculations and structural analysis
  • Produce bridge design deliverables (including drawings, specifications and technical reports), site surveys, construction stage duties, client liaison with members of design/construction teams, project management, costing and ensure progress against the project brief.
  • Check calculations and detailed drawings to ensure engineering designs meet appropriate quality and compliance controls, project brief and customer requirements.
  • Collaborate closely with multi-disciplinary members of the design team to deliver safe, efficient and buildable solutions.
  • Contribute to the preparation of enquiry plans, tender reviews, fee estimate sheets, scopes of work and change controls as required.
  • Provide feedback on the performance of the department from a technical and operational perspective.
  • Review specialist subcontractors/suppliers production calculations and drawings for technical compliance with design intent.

Accountabilities

  • Ensure team compliance with company quality management and best practice
  • Management of Engineers, Early Careers and Technicians in the production of calculations, design deliverables (including drawings, specifications and reports), site surveys, construction stage duties, client liaison, liaison with members of design/construction teams, project management, costing and any other relevant duty.
  • Support the development of Early Careers and Technicians
  • Degree qualified in Civil and/or Structural Engineering (or equivalent).
  • Considerable bridge engineering design, technical detailing and specification writing experience
  • Experience in bridge assessment to DMRB and/or Network Rail standards
  • Demonstrable experience of delivering projects in at least one sector that BakerHicks operates in, particularly highway and rail sectors.
  • Confident communication and presentation skills with the ability to simplify complex ideas.
  • An ability to develop relationships with both internal and external stakeholders that deliver long term benefits.
  • Be fully conversant with the basics of CDM Regulations, British Standards and Eurocodes with respect to structural loading, design and specification.
  • Good knowledge of structural analysis and ability to use LUSAS analysis software
  • Eligibility to pass criteria for security clearance required to work on sensitive projects.
  • Working knowledge of BIM software including Autodesk Navisworks.
  • Knowledge of CDM regulations.
  • Knowledge of current UK technical standards/publications and legislation requirements.
  • Knowledge of standard details and solutions, and compliance.
  • Chartered or Incorporated Member of ICE or IStructE (or equivalent).
  • Experience of contributing to bids, proposals and tender submissions.
  • Experience of delivering multi-disciplinary projects in several sectors that BakerHicks operates in.
  • Experience of managing small teams from Apprentices and Graduates to Engineer and Technician level.
  • Experience in managing commercial elements of projects.
  • Proficient in the use of Autodesk Revit and AutoCAD software for structural drawings.
  • Security clearance obtained.
  • Full clean UK driving license.
