Senior Embedded Systems Engineer, Nottingham

Company Overview

Flux has developed the world’s first Optical Tensor Processing Unit (OTPU). Flux's OTPUs are custom-designed AI accelerators optimized for training and inference of large AI models. Join us in London to be part of a dynamic team that thrives on innovation and speed.

The role

We’re searching for Senior Embedded Engineers to design and build high-performance tooling supporting OTPU hardware development. You will own tools related to hardware safety, calibration, debugging, and validation. Your mission is to go from concept to deployment—rapidly iterating, prototyping, and delivering robust embedded solutions that enable OTPUs to operate safely, efficiently, and at peak performance.

Responsibilities

  • Architect robust tooling for hardware validation and bring-up, with rapid prototyping in Python and a clear path to production implementations.
  • Design and implement embedded systems for hardware safety, synchronization, and low-level control.
  • Develop calibration and debug tooling, primarily in Python.
  • Define and implement CI/CD infrastructure tailored for embedded development to ensure fast iteration and system integrity.
  • Create systems for real-time monitoring, diagnostics, and fault handling across OTPU hardware.
  • Define and enforce boundaries between prototype and production code for maintainability.
  • Collaborate with optical, hardware, and software teams to align system interfaces, requirements, and performance goals.

Skills & Experience

  • 5+ years experience with bring-up, calibration, and debugging of custom hardware systems (e.g., SoCs, FPGAs, AI accelerators).
  • Deep proficiency in C/C++ for embedded applications, with understanding of real-time constraints, memory models, and hardware interfaces.
  • Strong Python skills for prototyping, automation, and test development.
  • Experience building CI/CD pipelines for embedded development.
  • Proficiency with hardware debugging tools (oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, JTAG) and electrical signal interpretation.
  • Solid understanding of hardware/software boundaries, including interrupt handling, bus protocols (e.g., PCIe), and memory-mapped I/O.
  • Excellent communication skills; ability to thrive in fast-paced, cross-disciplinary startup environments.

Details

  • Competitive salary from £135,000 to £165,000 depending on experience.
  • Stock options in a growing AI company.
  • Based in our new 5,000 sq. ft. office in Kings Cross, London.
  • All employees are required to work from our London HQ and live within a 45-minute commute; an additional £24,000/year incentive is offered for those living within 20 minutes.
  • Comprehensive healthcare insurance.
  • Private use of our 3D printer.

If you are passionate about advancing AI and excel in a high-energy, fast-paced environment, we want to hear from you. Apply now to join Flux and shape the future of computing.
