About the Client

Our client are a leading UK provider of smart, sustainable heat-network solutions, specialising in end-to-end services for local authorities, housing associations, and private developers. With decades of experience, their expertise ranges from design and build through to operation, metering, billing, and optimisation. Their mission centres on driving energy efficiency, reducing carbon, and delivering reliable, affordable heat for residents.

About the Role

We're looking for a Senior Embedded Software Engineer to join a growing R&D and engineering function developing innovative technology for the energy sector.

Based in Shipley, West Yorkshire, this is an opportunity to take a senior technical role in the development of production‑ready embedded systems, helping shape technical direction across multiple products. You'll work closely with software and hardware engineers to design and deliver robust solutions spanning energy management, real-time control and connected IoT devices.

This role would suit an experienced embedded engineer who can bring technical expertise and seniority to the team, with particularly strong experience in C/C++, embedded systems and STM32 microcontrollers.

How you'll spend your day

You'll play a key role in designing, developing and improving embedded software across a range of products, combining hands‑on engineering with technical leadership and collaboration across the wider R&D function.

  • Design and develop complex, production‑ready embedded software solutions for energy management and control systems.
  • Architect and implement embedded applications using C/C++, working across RTOS and bare‑metal environments.
  • Provide technical leadership and help shape the software architecture and technical direction across multiple product lines.
  • Develop software for ARM‑based microcontrollers, with a particular focus on STM32 devices.
  • Design and support real‑time systems, including feedback and control loops used within instrumentation and control applications.

  • Develop and support communication interfaces and protocols including I2C, SPI, UART, Modbus and Ethernet.
  • Contribute to power management and low‑power design, supporting the development of battery‑powered and energy‑efficient products.
  • Take ownership of code quality through code reviews, technical documentation, performance optimisation and engineering best practice.
  • Support and mentor other engineers, sharing knowledge and helping raise technical capability across the team.
  • Work collaboratively with hardware and software teams to diagnose complex issues across hardware, firmware and wider systems.
  • Contribute to embedded DevOps practices, including version control and CI/CD pipelines.
What you'll bring to this role

We're looking for an experienced embedded software engineer with a strong technical foundation and the confidence to take a senior position within the engineering team.

You’ll ideally bring:

  • 3+ years of commercial embedded software development experience, delivering production‑ready systems.
  • Strong hands‑on expertise in C/C++ for embedded systems.
  • Significant experience working with STM32 microcontrollers, which will be highly desirable for this role.
  • Experience developing software in RTOS and/or bare‑metal environments.
  • Strong knowledge of ARM‑based processors, including ARM Cortex‑M and/or Cortex‑A.
  • Hands‑on experience debugging embedded hardware and software using tools such as JTAG, oscilloscopes and logic analysers.
  • Experience working with embedded communication protocols including I2C, SPI, UART, Modbus and Ethernet.
  • An understanding of real‑time systems and feedback control loops, ideally within instrumentation or control environments.
  • Experience with power management, low‑power design and battery‑operated systems.
  • A collaborative approach and the ability to work effectively alongside hardware engineers and multidisciplinary development teams.
  • Experience using Git and CI/CD practices within an embedded software environment.
  • Strong problem‑solving skills and the ability to investigate complex issues across both hardware and software boundaries.
