Job description

Job Title: Senior Embedded Electronics Engineer
Location: Stockport
Salary: Up to £70k (DOE)

An established technology and engineering organisation is seeking a Senior Embedded Electronics Engineer to join its growing Research & Development team. The business is investing in the development of new and existing electronic products and is looking for an experienced engineer to play a key role in the design, development and delivery of advanced embedded systems. This is an excellent opportunity for a senior-level engineer with substantial industry experience to contribute to complex, hands‑on engineering projects within a collaborative and technically driven environment.

The successful candidate will bring strong expertise in C/C++, microcontroller and microprocessor architectures, real‑time operating systems (RTOS), unit testing and bootloader development, alongside practical electronics and hardware engineering experience. Strong analytical and system‑level debugging skills are essential, as is the ability to influence architectural decisions and provide technical guidance to less experienced engineers.

About the Role
  • Lead embedded software architecture and system‑level design for new and existing products.
  • Develop robust real‑time firmware in C/C++, working within strict timing, performance and memory constraints.
  • Design, develop and maintain peripheral drivers and interfaces, including SPI, I2C, UART, USB, ADC/DAC, PWM, DMA and Ethernet.
  • Configure, develop and optimise RTOS components, including task scheduling, memory management, memory pools and interrupt service routines (ISRs).
  • Undertake hardware bring‑up, bootloader development, power‑mode configuration and system‑level hardware debugging.
  • Contribute to schematic design, PCB layout reviews, hardware integration and validation activities.
  • Ensure embedded designs meet applicable security, reliability and electromagnetic compatibility (EMC/EMI) requirements.
  • Lead technical design reviews, assess engineering risks and make informed architectural decisions.
  • Mentor and support junior engineers, promoting sound engineering practices and technical development.
  • Collaborate with software, hardware, manufacturing, production and technical support teams throughout the product lifecycle.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement across development workflows, automated testing, version control and CI/CD processes.
About You
  • Degree in Electronics Engineering or a related discipline, or equivalent experience.
  • 5+ years' relevant industry experience in electronics engineering or embedded systems.
  • Strong C/C++ skills and experience with embedded toolchains, including Keil, IAR, GCC, VS Code and Eclipse.
  • Familiarity with STM32CubeMX, Altium, PSPICE and PCB design.
  • Knowledge of ARM, NXP and ST microcontrollers, including STM32 and STM8.
  • Experience with RTOS platforms, particularly FreeRTOS, bootloaders, JTAG, flash programming and secure firmware.
  • Understanding of encryption, embedded cybersecurity and secure coding.
  • Knowledge of communication protocols including SPI, I2C, UART, USB, CAN, RS-232, RS-485, TCP/IP, BLE, Wi-Fi and Ethernet.
  • Strong C/C++ firmware development and debugging skills, including RTOS, real‑time constraints and low‑power design.
  • Knowledge of analogue and digital electronics, schematics, PCB design and hardware/software integration.
  • Experience with Git, CI/CD, GitHub, Azure DevOps, Jira, unit testing and automated test systems.
  • Practical skills in hardware validation, fault‑finding, system‑level debugging, soldering and prototyping.
  • Strong analytical and problem‑solving abilities, with experience leading technical decisions, collaborating across engineering teams and mentoring junior engineers.
