Job Description:

Smiths Detection is a global leader in threat detection and screening solutions, safeguarding people, business, and infrastructure worldwide. With sites in 17 countries and research centers, we innovate in electronics, physics, chemistry, and more to deliver life-saving technology.

Based in Hemel Hempstead, the manufacturing facility produces trace detection equipment using Ion Mobility Spectrometry technology, including products like the Ionscan 600 and Lightweight Chemical Detector, renowned for performance and reliability globally.

You will join the Manufacturing Engineering team to maintain existing manufacturing processes and develop new capabilities. The Senior Electronic Equipment Design Engineer will collaborate with R&D Electronics and Software Engineers for new products, support manufacturing of current products, and coordinate with external suppliers for subsystems and equipment supply.

Responsibilities:
  • Lead electronics activities to enable and sustain manufacturing processes.
  • Design and develop production test systems.
  • Perform fault finding and troubleshooting of electrical circuits.
  • Investigate electronic approaches to meet new product requirements, proposing and implementing solutions to meet cost and throughput targets.
  • Interpret technical specifications and support manufacturing by resolving electronics-related issues, developing capacity, and improving test and fabrication equipment.
  • Address component obsolescence and develop solutions to extend product lifetimes.
  • Coordinate with external PCB manufacturers to ensure quality and performance of incoming parts.
  • Adhere to health and safety policies, conducting risk assessments as necessary.
  • Stay updated with developments in Electronics Engineering.
Candidate Profile:
  • Degree or HNC in Electronic Engineering or related field.
  • Minimum 5 years of relevant experience in a manufacturing environment.
  • Membership in a professional society such as IET.
  • Knowledge of electronics manufacturing methods and schematic capture tools (e.g., Pspice).
  • Understanding of Lean Manufacturing, Manufacturing Systems Analysis, and Gage R&R studies.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Strong team player with minimal supervision, capable of meeting deadlines.
Desirable Skills:
  • Knowledge of Military Standards.
  • Experience with Arduino-based systems.
  • Ability to mentor technicians and junior engineers.
  • Familiarity with electromechanical/pneumatic systems and manufacturing automation.
  • Experience managing subcontractors and their schedules.
