We’re looking for an experienced, hands-on Electronic Design Engineer who really understands how electronics work.
You’ll be involved in designing electronic circuits and PCBs, bringing up prototypes, writing firmware, testing systems and solving challenging technical problems. Just as importantly, you’ll be someone who can pick up an unfamiliar design, understand what’s happening, identify problems and work out how to fix them.
This is a varied technical role where you’ll work across multiple client projects, often involving different technologies, applications and industries. You’ll have the opportunity to take ownership of complex engineering challenges and contribute your expertise to a talented, multidisciplinary team.
You’ll also support other engineers with technical reviews, troubleshooting and design decisions, helping us continually improve the quality of our engineering.

Key responsibilities
- Design, develop and validate analogue and digital electronic circuits.
- Produce schematics and multilayer PCB layouts using Altium Designer.
- Bring up, test and debug new PCB assemblies, identifying and resolving hardware and firmware issues.
- Troubleshoot unfamiliar circuits and existing designs, diagnosing faults and developing practical solutions.
- Review schematics, PCB layouts and electronic designs to identify potential issues and opportunities for improvement.
- Select appropriate components, develop BOMs and consider availability, cost, reliability and manufacturability.
- Develop and modify embedded firmware in C/C++ for platforms such as STM32, ESP32 and similar microcontrollers.
- Work with wireless technologies including BLE, Wi-Fi, NB-IoT and LoRa.
- Integrate electronic hardware, firmware, sensors and communication systems into complete working products.
- Support EMC pre-compliance testing, troubleshooting and product certification activities.
- Design electronics with consideration for performance, reliability, testability, manufacturability and regulatory compliance.
- Take ownership of technical work packages, working to agreed project plans, budgets and deadlines.
- Provide technical input into project scoping, specifications and estimates.
- Support less experienced engineers through design reviews, technical guidance and knowledge sharing.
- Communicate technical issues, risks and recommendations clearly to colleagues and clients.
- Contribute to improvements in our engineering processes, technical standards and design practices.
What we’re looking forEssential requirements
Strong fundamentals. Practical confidence.
Above all, we’re looking for someone who understands analogue and digital electronics, can design circuits and PCBs in Altium, and enjoys bringing hardware to life. You’ll be comfortable debugging unfamiliar designs, working with embedded firmware and finding practical solutions when things don’t behave as expected.
- Degree in Electronic Engineering or an equivalent relevant qualification or experience.
- Typically at least five years’ commercial experience in electronic product development, although demonstrated technical capability is more important than years served.
- Strong understanding of analogue and digital electronics, circuit design and electronic components.
- Proficiency in Altium Designer for schematic capture and PCB layout.
- Proven practical experience bringing up, testing and debugging electronic circuits and PCB assemblies.
- Excellent fault‑finding and problem‑solving skills, including diagnosing problems in designs developed by other engineers.
- Confident using oscilloscopes, logic analysers, multimeters and other electronic test equipment.
- Experience with embedded microcontrollers such as STM32, ESP32 or similar.
- Ability to develop, modify and debug embedded C/C++ firmware.
- Knowledge of wireless communications and the challenges of integrating wireless hardware into electronic products.
- Understanding of EMC-conscious design and good electronic engineering practices.
- Experience working to defined project scopes, budgets and deadlines.
- Ability to work independently, make sound technical decisions and take ownership of difficult engineering problems.
- Good technical communication skills and the confidence to discuss engineering decisions with colleagues and clients.
Highly desirable
RF or intrinsic safety experience? We’d particularly like to hear from you.
Strong RF knowledge would be a real advantage, including antenna integration, matching networks, RF PCB layout or wireless performance testing.
We’re also particularly interested in experience designing electronics for hazardous locations, specifically intrinsically safe circuits to IEC 60079-11, and supporting ATEX or IECEx certification. Neither specialism is essential to apply.
- Strong RF electronics knowledge, including antenna design, matching networks, RF PCB layout, wireless performance optimisation and RF testing.
- Hazardous location design experience, particularly intrinsically safe electronics to IEC 60079-11 and support for ATEX or IECEx certification.
- Experience working within a product design or engineering consultancy.
- Experience developing low-power, battery-operated and wireless IoT products.
- Experience with EMC testing, pre-compliance investigations and troubleshooting.
- Experience in industrial, medical, aerospace, defence or oil and gas applications.
- Knowledge of design for manufacture (DFM), design for test (DFT) and production engineering.
- Experience taking electronic products through certification and into manufacture.
- Experience mentoring engineers, conducting design reviews or providing technical guidance.
- Experience supporting client meetings, technical proposals and project planning.
