Senior Electrical Engineer – Technical Authority
London, UK (hybrid)

Mint Selection are partnered with one of the UK's leading IPPs who have a strong track record of delivering utility-scale renewables assets across Europe.

Following the successful development of a significant UK renewables (Solar & BESS) pipeline, our client is entering an exciting new phase as they transition from development into project delivery and long-term asset ownership.

The Role

The Senior Electrical Engineer will act as the company’s technical authority for substations, transmission connections and associated electrical infrastructure for the project lifecycle. The role will provide technical leadership and assurance throughout development, procurement, construction, commissioning and operations, ensuring projects are delivered safely and that long-term asset performance is protected.

This is a newly created position offering the opportunity to influence how major renewable energy projects are delivered whilst helping establish best practice across an expanding project portfolio.

Key Responsibilities:
Pre-construction Phase
  • Develop and maintain management systems related to electrical engineering including: company standards, specifications, ERs, and preferred technical solutions for substations, transmission connections and HV cable systems.
  • Work with project teams to develop resourcing requirements and Owner's Engineer scope and assurance requirements to fulfil company standards for project delivery.
  • Support the project management team in the development of design scope of work, studies and design deliverables.
  • Ensure that all contractors’ scope of works are complete for the design, construction operations and maintenance of the project substations and electrical infrastructure identifying interfaces risk and mitigation plans.
  • Participate in contract negotiation as required.
  • Support Grid team engagement with NESO and NGET regarding technical compliance, design interfaces and energisation requirements.
  • Maintain industry knowledge and latest technology developments.
  • Capture lessons learned from development, construction and operational assets and feed improvements into future project specifications and contracting strategies.
Construction Phase
  • Provide specialist HV engineering support to the Project Director, Construction Managers and project team throughout construction, commissioning and energisation activities.
  • Ensure that an effective design review and technical assurance process is implemented and executed by the project management team, typically via the Owner’s Engineer service.
  • Provide oversight of: Factory Acceptance Tests (FATs), supplier audits and manufacturing inspections for critical equipment packages ensuring compliance with the company standards.
  • Establish inspection and test requirements for key HV construction activities and verify that appropriate quality assurance and quality control processes are implemented by contractors. Supporting the project team on electrical non-conformances and quality observations.
  • Support project teams in the management and close-out of electrical non-conformances and quality observations.
  • Participate in readiness reviews, hold-point inspections and witness activities associated with critical electrical infrastructure.
  • Working with the Owners Engineer and project management team to support the development and review of commissioning strategies, energisation plans, outage plans and operational readiness activities.
  • Support the investigation and resolution of commissioning issues, protection system defects and post-energisation performance concerns.
  • Support Asset Mgmt. function alongside the HSE lead to develop and ensure appropriate implement of HV Rules and electrical safety management systems.
  • Ensure that all required quality records, commissioning documentation, test certificates, as-built drawings, OEM documentation, warranties and maintenance information related to the HV systems are complete, accurate and available prior to handover.
Asset Management and Operations
  • Provide specialist engineering support to asset operations.
  • Support the investigation of equipment failures, protection system events, operational incidents and contractor warranty claims.
  • Support asset integrity assessments and condition monitoring activities for substations, protection systems and associated electrical infrastructure.
  • Identify lessons learned from operational performance and feed improvements into future project standards, specifications and procurement strategies.
Key Requirements
  • 5+ years experience in large-scale energy infrastructure development and construction, with demonstrable experience delivering transmission infrastructure, solar PV and/or BESS projects in the UK.
  • Demonstrable experience supporting the design, construction, commissioning or operation of transmission-connected substations up to 132kV or above, including protection systems, energisation activities and interface management with network operators.
  • Considerable experience in FATs, installation and commissioning of HV equipment.
  • Familiarity of HV Rules.
  • Experience working in multidisciplinary teams with both internal and contract resource including reviewing and managing Owners Engineer deliverables.
  • Comfortable working in lean and growing organisation with scope to shape structure and way of working.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and influence.
