Job description

  • Senior Protection & Control Design Engineer

Location: UK Wide (Remote working available)

Salary: £55,000 to £75,000 (Salary Package)

    Position: Permanent

Turner Lovell is recruiting for a Senior Protection & Control Design Engineer to join a rapidly expanding engineering design consultancy and grid connection contractor. Our client delivers bespoke HV infrastructure solutions that are critical to the UK's energy transition and net zero goals.

In this senior-level position, you will lead technical design activities for low to high voltage substation projects across transmission and distribution networks. This is an opportunity to work on complex grid connection schemes, supporting both new build and existing infrastructure upgrades.

    Key Responsibilities:

    • Lead the design and coordination of Protection & Control systems for substations up to 400kV.
    • Develop detailed protection schematics, panel wiring drawings, and equipment interconnection diagrams.
    • Specify and configure a range of protection relays, producing settings and logic files as required.
    • Act as a technical point of contact during FAT, commissioning, and construction phases.
    • Mentor junior engineers and review design outputs to ensure accuracy and compliance.
    • Engage with clients, suppliers, and network operators to resolve technical issues and ensure project delivery.

    Required Qualifications & Experience:

    • A degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems, or a related discipline.
    • Min 8 years experience in the design and delivery of protection and control systems within the high-voltage (11kV-400kV) sector.
    • Strong understanding of protection principles, relay coordination, and electrical system fault analysis.
    • Experience using relay software.
    • Knowledge of industry standards and regulations, including CDM, ESQCR, and relevant grid connection policies.
    • Prior exposure to both brownfield and greenfield substation projects.
    • Chartered Engineer status or working toward chartership is preferred.

This is an excellent opportunity to join a forward-thinking business leading the way in electrical design for high-voltage infrastructure projects. If you're ready to make an impact, apply today to take the next step in your career.
