Our Mission
At Vertical Aerospace, we are pioneering the way for electric aviation. The VX4, our eVTOL (electric, vertical, take-off and landing), 'zero emissions' aircraft will set a new safety standard for how we will navigate the sky.
We won't realise our mission following the same legacy processes and traditions our predecessors followed; instead, we want to 'redefine' aerospace best practices.
We are growing quickly from a prototype business to a scaling SME, and the next few years will be critical to our success and delivering on our ambitious goals of having the VX4 in service by 2030.
What to Expect
As a Senior HV Systems Engineer, you will join a growing team of passionate individuals whose primary focus is to develop, design and integrate the high-voltage distribution systems and power protection solutions that will power our fully electric VX4 aircraft.
A typical day could range from designing sophisticated HV protection systems and power distribution units to performing detailed safety assessments and supporting system-level fault tree analysis. You'll work closely with our propulsion and battery teams to ensure seamless integration of HV systems across the aircraft.
The ability to lead complex technical projects, make critical design decisions, and mentor junior engineers will all factor into this role's impact and your success.
What You'll Do
You will be responsible for HV distribution system design, power distribution system and the analysis and development of the HV protections.
You will own the propulsion architecture, components and battery HV system integration, ensuring optimal performance and safety.
You will design and develop HV load protection systems including contactors and solid state protections, as well as power distribution units.
You will perform analysis of functional, behavioural and performance requirements, including logical design, architectural design, functional decomposition, allocation and interface definition.
You will conduct safety assessments of different solutions and perform detailed studies to lead the design of various HV architectures.
You will be responsible for electronics integration within the battery pack and prepare comprehensive documentation from design concepts to detailed electronic specifications.
You will conduct verification at component level through testing, electrical system FMEA, and support system FTA activities.
What You'll Bring
Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Electronics or Aerospace Engineering.
10 years in product engineering design and development with strong technical project management skills.
Deep expertise in system engineering methodology including requirement capture, functional trees, and requirement management.
Extensive experience working with HV (>200V) AC or DC systems and designing electrical diagram drawings.
Strong experience with harness development and knowledge of clearance and creepage rules.
Proven ability to size cables, fuses and protections, with specific knowledge about solid state protections and SSPC.
Experience with fuse coordination and bus-bar design thermal sizing.
Strong background in electronics PCB mechanical integration and experience with railway, automotive or aerospace development design processes ideal.

We're on a mission. Where others see limits, we see opportunity, and we work at pace. Working at Vertical isn't your average role but for those seeking a challenge, a flexible, supportive organisation and an incredible team; working here is an opportunity to do the best work of your career.
