As part of their continued growth in the UK, we are recruiting a Senior EHV Cable Design Engineer to join their Transmission & Distribution engineering team. This is a key position, offering the opportunity to lead major cable design workstreams while contributing to the strategic development of the team\'s UK design capability.
Role Overview
You will operate as a senior technical authority in EHV cable system design, supporting the delivery of engineering packages ranging from 11kV to 400kV, with a focus on voltages of 132kV and above. You will work collaboratively with both UK and international teams, mentor junior engineers, and ensure compliance with client specifications and national/international standards.
Responsibilities
- Lead the delivery of EHV cable system design packages on multi-disciplinary engineering projects
- Produce detailed designs in line with UK and international standards (e.g., ENA, BS, IEC, IEEE)
- Perform cable studies including rating, short circuit, pulling force and thermal thrust calculations
- Provide technical leadership, design sign-off and quality assurance on cable deliverables
- Mentor and guide junior engineers within the cable design team
- Collaborate with other engineering disciplines to support full lifecycle project delivery
- Support client meetings, tender preparation, technical presentations and FEED studies
- Develop and maintain design tools, workflows, and technical standards for cable systems
- Ensure compliance with CDM 2015, and all applicable SHE legislation and industry requirements
- Support marketing and business development activities by building client relationships
- Actively contribute to professional bodies and represent the company as a subject matter expert
- Drive a culture of technical excellence, innovation and “Safety by Design” across all projects
Essential Requirements
- Degree in Electrical Engineering (or related field) from an accredited programme
- Minimum 7 years' experience in EHV cable system design, with at least 4 years on UK T&D projects
- Chartered or working toward membership of a recognised engineering institution (e.g. IET, CIGRE)
- Deep understanding of cable system engineering on 132kV+ networks
- Practical knowledge of UK substation design procedures and specifications (e.g., National Grid TP & NGTS documents)
- Proficient in cable rating software such as CRATER, CymCap, ETAP or Cableizer
- Strong knowledge of CDM 2015 regulations, safety standards, and environmental legislation
- Excellent communication and report writing skills, with the ability to influence at all levels
- Proven ability to work independently and within cross-functional project teams
Desirable
- Experience with National Grid specifications: TP135, TP137, TP141, TP153, TP163, TP188, TP189
- Knowledge of NGTS documents and associated technical standards
- CDM training, Substation safety access training (e.g., BESC: AIM, NSI 30)
- Understanding of Impressed Voltage, temporary works procedures and permit systems
- CAD proficiency and familiarity with digital engineering workflows
