Qualifications

Responsibilities

• Lead electrical design for power distribution from concept to detail design.
• Perform load calculations, short-circuit studies, coordination and arc flash analyses.
• Create single-line diagrams, panel schedules, layouts and wiring details in CAD tools.
• Specify switchgear, transformers, generators, UPS, and cabling.
• Ensure compliance with SANS/NEC/IEC and other standards.
• Coordinate designs with mechanical, structural and architectural teams.

About the Role

Our client, a leading consultancy firm specializing in complex building services and infrastructure, is seeking a Senior Electrical Design Engineer with a focus on Power & Distribution to join their growing team in Randburg. This role is essential for delivering high-quality electrical designs for a variety of projects, including commercial, industrial, and institutional facilities. You will be responsible for the conceptualization, design development, specification, and coordination of electrical power systems, ensuring optimal performance, safety, and compliance with all relevant codes and standards. The role involves a hybrid work model, enabling collaboration with the team in the Randburg office while offering flexibility. We are looking for a technically proficient and proactive engineer with a strong portfolio in power distribution design.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead the electrical design process for power distribution systems, from initial concept to detailed design documentation.
• Perform electrical load calculations, short-circuit studies, protective device coordination, and arc flash analyses.
• Develop detailed electrical drawings, including single-line diagrams, panel schedules, equipment layouts, and wiring details using CAD software.
• Specify electrical equipment such as switchgear, transformers, generators, UPS systems, and cabling.
• Ensure designs comply with SANS, NEC, and other relevant national and international standards.
• Coordinate electrical designs with other disciplines, including mechanical, structural, and architectural teams.
• Review shop drawings and submittals from contractors, ensuring compliance with design intent.
• Conduct site inspections during the construction phase to verify installation quality and address site queries.
• Mentor junior engineers and provide technical guidance on power distribution design best practices.
• Participate in client meetings and provide technical presentations.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent qualification.
• Minimum of 8 years of experience in electrical engineering design, with a strong emphasis on power distribution systems.
• Proficiency in using electrical design software such as AutoCAD Electrical, Revit MEP, or similar.
• Strong knowledge of power system analysis software (e.g., ETAP, DIgSILENT) is highly advantageous.
• Expertise in understanding and applying relevant electrical codes and standards (SANS, NEC, IEC).
• Experience with building services design for commercial, industrial, or healthcare facilities.
• Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making capabilities.
• Strong communication, leadership, and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to manage multiple projects and work effectively in a hybrid team environment in Randburg.
