Equans is looking for a Senior Electrical Design Engineer (Decarbonisation & Energy Solutions) to join our team in London or Manchester. This is a full-time role. On offer is a competitive salary, and benefits package.

The Senior Electrical Design Engineer is responsible for the delivery of high-quality electrical designs and technical support across decarbonisation and sustainable retrofit projects. The role focuses on designing and integrating low-carbon electrical systems such as solar PV, battery storage, LED lighting, and building power infrastructure.

This position requires technical leadership, design management, and mentoring responsibilities within a multidisciplinary environment. The role supports public and private sector clients in achieving their decarbonisation and net-zero ambitions.

Working closely with the Lead Electrical Design Engineer, this role ensures compliance with industry regulations, fosters innovation, and supports the development of junior engineers within the team.

What will you deliver?

Electrical Design & Engineering

  • Develop electrical designs across RIBA Stages 2 to 4, with ongoing technical support to the project team through Stages 5 to 6.
  • Design and integrate low-carbon energy solutions, such as power distribution, solar PV, battery storage, LED lighting, and smart controls for the integration of heat pumps, and other energy-efficiency measures typical of sustainable retrofit into new and existing buildings.
  • Conduct load assessments, equipment sizing, and compliance checks (BS , IET Wiring Regs, UK Building Regs).
  • Support energy modelling and system simulations using Amtech, Dialux, Relux, PVSol, IES, Energy Pro, and other tools.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant standards (CIBSE, PAS , MCS, UK Building Regs) and guidelines.
  • Participate in the implementation and coordination of BIM and CAD-based design processes.

Design Management & Team Development

  • Undertake design and design coordination and management, integrating mechanical, and energy systems for seamless project execution.
  • Participate in technical reviews in support of the tendering-, commercial and project delivery.
  • Facilitate collaborative design workshops to enhance interdisciplinary coordination and innovation.
  • Ensure best practices in design management, aligning with sustainability, compliance, and operational efficiency.
  • Liaise with the design and project teams to ensure smooth progression into delivery.
  • Produce and develop technical reports, drawings, and specifications.

Project and Risk Support

  • Manage designs and support end-to-end project lifecycle delivery, helping to ensure projects are delivered on time and within budget.
  • Conduct design reviews, ensuring design solutions meet performance, safety, and regulatory standards.
  • Assist in identifying design risks and contribute to risk mitigation strategies and manage the design risk registers.
  • Provide input into procurement and supplier selection processes.
  • Support planning submissions and due diligence processes for retrofit interventions.

Technical Leadership & Retrofit Strategy

  • Effectively communicate technical concepts clearly to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Support internal teams and external clients in decarbonisation projects such as ReFit, PSDS, Warmer Homes, GHNF, and HNES.
  • Manage the development of decarbonisation project planning for public and private sector clients, including local authorities, social housing associations, healthcare, and commercial organisations.
  • Conduct technical and financial feasibility assessments for low-carbon electrical systems such as solar PV, battery storage, LED lighting, and building power infrastructure and support technologies such as heat pumps, HVAC, and BMS, ensuring their viability and suitability.
  • Oversee the retrofit design process, ensuring electrical interventions align with decarbonisation goals and funding criteria, from feasibility to completed design.
  • Coordinate with energy, mechanical, and project delivery teams to ensure holistic system design.
  • Collaborate in design workshops and knowledge-sharing sessions to foster continuous improvement and innovation.

Who are you?

Qualifications or Required Experience:

  • Experience in design and design management, risk assessment, and project delivery of sustainable retrofit, low-carbon technologies, and energy efficiency projects.
  • Experience working across full RIBA stages on multidisciplinary teams.
  • Experience in public sector or funding-driven decarbonisation projects such as PSDS and WH/ SHDF.
  • Minimum of 6 to 10 years experience in Electrical building services design.
