Job summary

UK Power Networks is seeking a Senior Electrical Design Engineer - LPN based in London to join the Capital Programme and Procurement directorate. The role reports to the Design Lead and is a permanent position with blended working after probation, 3 days in the office and 2 days remote.

The successful candidate will produce and assure high quality electrical designs to scope, cost, time and quality targets, complying with UKPN CDM standards and relevant regulations.

Qualifications

  • Degree-level or equivalent in engineering or science.
  • Chartered Engineer or working towards Chartership.

Responsibilities

  • Production of Electrical Designs that can be constructed in compliance with standards and CDM requirements with no supervision and assure others designs.
  • Deliver effective designs, conforming to Codes of Practice and standards for all designs relevant to UKPN Sub-stations, with Electrical Design.
  • Produce technical, commercial, and contractual documents for procurement of engineering products.
  • Ensure compliance with legislation, regulations and company procedures.
  • Comply with design assurance and audit processes.
  • Prepare concept and developed design from specifications and drawings within defined periods.
  • Provide excellent service to the customer.
  • Work as a team within multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Liaise with operational teams to ensure smooth process from enquiry to energisation and project closure.
  • Comply with 2015 CDM Regulations as designer/principal designer.
  • Design to eliminate hazards and reduce remaining risks with CDM.
  • Mentor other team members to enhance technical knowledge.

Job description

This Senior Electrical Design Engineer - LPN will report to the Design Lead and will work within the Capital Programme and Procurement directorate in our London, Bidder Street office. You will be a permanent employee.

You will attract a salary of £84,160plus inner London Allowance and a bonus of 3%. This role can also offer blended working after probationary period (6 months) - 3 days in the office and 2 remote

Job Purpose

Working across an Assets and Connections Portfolio, the successful candidate will be responsible for producing and assuring high quality electrical designs to an agreed scope. Designs to be delivered to cost, time and quality targets.

All designs must meet UK Power Networks design and CDM standards. These designs could be for both non-contestable and contestable works.

The successful candidate will be expected to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team, delivering design technical excellence.

Principle Accountabilities
  • Production of Electrical Designs that can be constructed in compliance with standards and CDM requirements with no supervision and assure others designs.
  • Deliver effective designs, which conform to all relevant Codes of Practice and company and industry standards (for all designs relevant to UKPN Sub-stations), in conjunction with Electrical Design.
  • Contribute to the production of technical, commercial, and contractual documents for procurement of engineering products.
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant legislation, regulations, and company procedures.
  • Compliance with design assurance and audit processes.
  • Preparation of concept and developed design, from specifications and drawings within defined periods.
  • Provide an excellent service to the customer.
  • Work as a Team Player within larger multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Liaise with the operational teams to ensure a smooth process from initial enquiry through to final energisation and project closure.
  • Complying with the requirements of the designer / principal designer as determined by the 2015 CDM Regulations.
  • Ensure design eliminates any hazards which may give rise to risks; and reduce risks from any remaining hazards (in conjunction with CDM).
  • Supporting and mentoring other members of the team to enhance their technical knowledge and experience.
Skill Qualification and Experience
  • Strong Electrical engineering background and experience in electrical engineering. Knowledge of power system and protection design at 132KV, 33KV, 11KV, and intermediate voltages.
  • Ability to work with external engineering organisations and customers/stakeholders representing UKPN to best effect.
  • Capable of final sign off of designs in specific area.
  • A good safety culture and sound understanding of Construction Design and Management (CDM) Regulations and their application in this role.
  • Ability to work unsupervised, set and comply with own targets, and identify and implement innovative cost saving solutions.
  • Good team working skills.
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft desktop applications, in particular: Word, Excel, Project and PowerPoint.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and be competent in written and oral communications.
  • Awareness of current and technological developments in distribution plant and equipment.
  • Degree level or equivalent in engineering or science.
  • Chartered Engineer or working towards achieving Chartership.
  • Extensive Knowledge of design processes and relevant DNO, ENA and International Design Standards including relevant operational aspects to successfully deliver designs.
  • A good level of business, environmental, safety, financial, and regulatory awareness.
  • A general appreciation of financial reporting systems.
  • Knowledge of project management.
  • Proficient in the use of AutoCAD and or Micro station.
  • Broad knowledge of cables and overhead lines.
  • Input into innovative construction ideas and techniques, which feed into UK Power Networks Green Action Plan.
Dimensions

The post holder is required to undertake site visits as part of this role, and this will include entry to operational substations where compliance with safety rules and procedures is mandatory.
