Job description

Are you ready to elevate your electrical engineering career with a leader in the energy sector? UK Power Networks is seeking a driven Senior Electrical Design Engineer to become an integral part of our Engineering Design team within Capital Programme & Procurement, based in Bury St Edmunds. This is your opportunity to impact the infrastructure of tomorrow, utilising your expertise while enjoying comprehensive rewards and a collaborative work culture.

Why choose UK Power Networks? We offer a competitive salary of £80,574 per annum, plus a car allowance and a 3% bonus. You'll benefit from 25 days of annual leave (plus bank holidays), private health insurance, reservist leave, a personal pension plan (with up to 10% employer contribution), various tax-efficient benefits, discounted gym membership, Occupational Health support, and employee discounts across hundreds of retailers.

Imagine being at the forefront of innovative power solutions, where your skills will drive the design and delivery of high-quality electrical systems across an Assets and Connections Portfolio. As a Senior Electrical Design Engineer, you'll ensure all projects meet UK Power Networks' stringent design and CDM standards, covering both non-contestable and contestable works. You will create electrical designs that comply with industry codes of practice and standards, assuring their constructability and safety, while independently overseeing compliance with all relevant legislation and company procedures.

Your role will encompass the entire design process: from preparing concept and developed designs based on technical specifications and drawings, to producing and reviewing technical, commercial, and contractual documents for procurement of engineering products. You will conduct peer reviews of contestable design submissions, deliver effective solutions on time and within budget, and provide outstanding service to both internal and external customers. Your work will contribute to key stages of the project lifecycle, from initial enquiry to energisation and closure, all while supporting the requirements of the designer and principal designer as outlined in the 2015 CDM Regulations. Safety is paramount, and your focus will be on eliminating hazards and mitigating risks throughout the design process.

Collaboration is key at UK Power Networks. You'll work as part of a multi-disciplinary team, liaising with operational teams, external engineering partners, and stakeholders to ensure seamless progression of projects. Your knowledge of power system and protection design at 132KV, 33KV, 11KV, and intermediate voltages, as well as your familiarity with DNO, ENA, and international standards, will be crucial in achieving success. We value innovation, so your input into new construction ideas and techniques will directly contribute to our Green Action Plan and the evolution of our distribution plant and equipment.

We're looking for a Chartered Engineer or a degree-qualified professional working toward Chartership, with a solid background in electrical engineering and a proactive approach to project management. Proficiency in AutoCAD or MicroStation, a sound understanding of financial, business, safety, and regulatory contexts, and a commitment to mentoring colleagues are all essential. You'll also be required to undertake site visits, including entry to operational substations, where safety compliance is non-negotiable.

If you're passionate about engineering excellence and want to play a vital role in powering communities, now's the time to act. Apply before 20/08/2025 to join UK Power Networks as a Senior Electrical Design Engineer and shape the energy landscape of the future.
