Job summary

University of Essex invites applications for a postdoctoral research role within PaiNeuro. The project focuses on objective pain measurement from EEG using machine-learning methods, with collaboration with Vestre Viken Hospital Trust in Norway.

You will develop reproducible EEG processing workflows, explore deep learning architectures, and validate models on independent data, contributing to publications and open-source tools.

Qualifications

• PhD in computer science, electronic engineering, biomedical engineering, neuroscience, machine learning or closely related field.
• Strong Python programming and ML library experience.
• Experience applying ML, including deep learning, to EEG or high-dimensional biosignals.
• Robust model evaluation including participant-level cross-validation.
• Ability to work independently within a multidisciplinary team.

Responsibilities

• Develop and maintain EEG preprocessing, artefact handling and feature extraction workflows.
• Implement and compare deep-learning approaches for EEG-based pain prediction.
• Develop Riemannian geometry-based methods using EEG covariance representations.
• Investigate cross-participant generalisation and transfer learning.
• Validate models with held-out data and report performance with classification metrics.
• Contribute to publications, open-source software and data documentation.
• Collaborate with clinical partners in Norway and participate in project meetings.
