Job description
Overview

The role of the Senior Economist is focused on the delivery and project management of macroeconomic and climate-related consultancy projects. They will develop the methodology and project offering, conduct the analysis and present the results to our clients. As the post-holder becomes more confident in the post, they will be expected to work on multiple projects simultaneously. There is also opportunity for the Senior Economist to oversee an Assistant Economist if they have prior management experience. The position reports to the Lead Economist for Climate Modelling and Scenarios. A significant part of the role involves digesting the latest academic and grey literature to answer client questions in the macroeconomics and climate space. The Senior Economist will implement quantitative models such as econometric analysis or scenario analysis using the GEM. Examples of recent climate consultancy projects include: estimating the effects of the EU\'s climate policy on Finland\'s economy for a European trade union; using macroeconomic climate scenarios to inform corporate strategy and meet Climate-related Financial Disclosure requirements; using scenario analysis to model macro-financial impacts of acute physical climate risks (e.g., a UK flood event) for regulatory stress testing; and assessing the economic impact of three different energy transition scenarios for a European fund manager to influence public policy. The Senior Economist will benefit from Oxford Economics\' learning and development offering and Career Progression Framework, which support both career aspirations and organisational goals.

Key Responsibilities
  • Independently or collaboratively conduct research and literature reviews in the climate and macroeconomics field.
  • Perform climate scenario analysis using our in-house macroeconomic model (the GEM) for end-uses such as impact assessment, strategic planning, stress-testing, policy design and regulation.
  • Write up economic research results in Word or PowerPoint reports for climate and macroeconomic consultancy projects.
  • Contribute and implement ideas to improve the team\'s modelling and research capabilities, including work on Oxford Economics\' climate damage function, power and energy sector models, and other climate-change economics themes.
  • Keep up-to-date with the latest climate policies, research and institutional reports, including developments from NGFS, IEA and IPCC scenarios.
  • Ensure robust and rigorous economic analyses in consulting projects.
  • Manage client queries regarding consultancy research results.
  • Give overview presentations to prospective clients on the climate team\'s consultancy capabilities.
  • Line management of an economist, including task management and career development planning, where applicable.
Requirements and Desirable Skills
  • Strong academic education with a BA/BSc in economics.
  • Intuitive understanding of macroeconomics with a keen personal interest in climate or environmental issues.
  • Experience of economic analysis including econometrics and using applied macroeconomic models for forecasting and/or scenario analysis.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain economic concepts and quantitative results and their implications to non-specialists.
  • Attention to detail and a commitment to rigorous, accurate work within time and resource constraints.
  • Strong track record in developing client relationships.
  • Clear written and oral communication, including the ability to explain economic concepts and quantitative results and their implications clearly and concisely.
  • Able to apply quantitative analytical techniques to datasets using software such as Excel, EViews, Stata, R and/or Python.
  • Collegiate and collaborative mindset to support team objectives and development.
  • Desirable: a postgraduate degree in economics or a climate-related discipline.
  • Desirable: experience in management and development of employees.
  • Desirable: experience contributing to business development and/or competitive bid writing in a consultancy environment.
  • Desirable: experience with quantitative analysis in programming software such as R or Python.
About Oxford Economics

Oxford Economics, a leading global economic research and consultancy firm, is looking for a Senior Economist to join our expanding Climate Modelling and Scenarios team in London or Oxford. The team handles a wide range of climate and macroeconomic issues raised by clients, including assessments of macroeconomic impacts of climate and adaptation policies and the economic and social costs of further global warming. The team conducts bespoke climate consultancy projects (usually one to six months) requiring a report, scenario analysis, long-term forecasts and client presentations. It also oversees the Global Climate Service (GCS), a subscription product with regular research briefings and predefined climate scenarios. The Climate Modelling and Scenarios team sits within the wider Scenarios and Modelling unit, which models bespoke scenarios for strategic planning, policy analysis and stress testing. Most projects involve working with or developing Oxford Economics\' in-house macroeconomic model (the Global Economic Model, GEM). There are opportunities to work across teams within the unit, including projects with a pure international trade or macroeconomic focus.
