Our client is a diverse property investment & development business, delivering opportunities to improve prosperity, tackle inequalities and drive economic growth. They work on a variety of projects, including brownfield sites and large-scale manufacturing units. As well as this, they work on major town centre redevelopments such as retail developments, leisure facilities and housing developments. They are looking for someone to lead, develop and promote the ecology team, providing advice on ecological matters to the Group and other interested parties and stakeholders.

Your new role

The main responsibilities of your new role will include:

  • Lead, develop and promote the Group’s Ecology Service and in particular the newly formed Habitat Bank business
  • Provide advice on ecological matters to colleagues and other interested parties and stakeholders.
  • Manage the work of the Ecology Support Officer and Sustainability Officer, including assisting in the recruitment, selection, induction, discipline, training and development.
  • Undertake or oversee Environmental and Ecological Assessments
  • Provide advice concerning the ecological implications of proposed developments and planning applications to ensure compliance with relevant legislation and policy and to further nature conservation across the Group.
  • Provide advice concerning the conservation and enhancement of ecological resources to ensure compliance with relevant legislation and policy and to further nature conservation and sustainability across the Group.
  • Provide advice on options to deliver the most appropriate outcomes at any site to balance the maximisation of beneficial ecological and financial outcomes
  • Approve or devise briefs for assessments, studies and mitigation works necessitated by planning conditions
  • Approve or devise specifications for ecological works to be carried out by internal or external contractors
  • Ensure adequate supervision of ecological works to be carried out by internal or external contractors
  • Support the delivery of the Group’s Sustainability targets. Deliver internal and external communications to foster engagement and champion ecology and sustainability.
  • Provide specialist representation on internal and external working and steering groups.

What you'll need to succeed

You must have:

  • Relevant degree and chartered membership of the Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management
  • Detailed understanding of ecological legislation and policy.
  • Detailed knowledge of UK Habitat and Biodiversity legislation
  • Good understanding of development management and strategic planning elements of the town and country planning system.
  • Detailed knowledge of techniques for the conservation, management and enhancement of habitats and species.
  • Knowledge of funding regimes and opportunities for land management.
  • Full UK Driving licence.

Proven experience in:

  • Natural England and / or Environment Agency licensing
  • Project management
  • Financial management
  • Public engagement
  • Residential land development

Proven Experience in (Desirable)

  • Land management
  • Supply chain management
  • Livestock management & animal welfare
  • Measurement & recording of Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions
  • Implementing programme to reduce Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions
  • Stakeholder engagement to measure, record and influence reduction in Scope 3 emissions
  • Renewable energy systems, regulatory requirements and infrastructure constraints
  • Circular economy systems, regulatory requirements and infrastructure constraints (waste licensing / recycling / product manufacture)
