Recruiting for Senior Ecologist

Join a multi-disciplined Environmental Consultancy as a Senior Ecologist. The ideal candidate will have several years of experience and be degree qualified in Ecology (or a similar field).

About the Role

Based in our city offices in Manchester or Cambridge, with the flexibility to work from home 1-2 days per week, you will lead ecological surveys, deliver high-quality reports, and support team development. We value diverse experience and understand that the perfect candidate may not meet every single requirement. If you bring at least 80% of the qualifications and have relevant or transferable skills, we encourage you to apply.

As a Senior Ecologist, you will play a key role in delivering ecological consultancy services across various projects. Your responsibilities will include leading fieldwork activities, managing small on-site teams, planning and resourcing surveys for different habitats, conducting protected species surveys, and preparing detailed technical reports such as Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs) and habitat assessments. You will also mentor junior staff, maintain strong client relationships, contribute to business development through fee proposals and tenders, and ensure compliance with health and safety protocols.

Qualifications and Skills

• BSc in Ecology or a related field (MSc preferred)
• Associate CIEEM membership, working towards Full membership
• Proven expertise in UKHab/PEA surveys, including complex sites
• Proficiency in protected species surveys (e.g., GCN, Dormouse, Bat), with relevant licences
• Solid understanding of UK and EU environmental legislation and planning policy
• Competence in GIS or similar mapping tools
• Strong data handling, analysis, and interpretation skills
• Effective communication with clients and good time/budget management
• Experience in sectors such as rail, energy, and industrial developments is highly desirable
