Job description

Senior Design Manager – Transmission & Distribution (m/f/d)

Glasgow, UK | Permanent | Hybrid with UK/Global Collaboration

We are partnering with a global engineering consultancy that is scaling its UK operations within the Power Transmission & Distribution sector. They are now looking to appoint a Senior Design Manager to lead multi-disciplinary engineering design projects and act as a key delivery interface between internal teams, clients, and regulatory bodies.

This is a strategic and hands-on leadership role suited for someone with deep design management expertise, experience in National Grid frameworks, and a strong understanding of UK safety and compliance requirements.



Key Responsibilities

  • Manage delivery of complex power T&D engineering design projects (FEED to closeout)

  • Lead teams across the UK and international offices, aligning with project scope, budget, and programme

  • Act as Project Manager or Design Manager depending on project structure (EPC, D&B, or design-only)

  • Ensure adherence to all relevant UK Health & Safety, CDM 2015, and Environmental legislation

  • Act as CDM Principal Designer and Lead Contractor Design Approval Engineer (LCDAE) where applicable

  • Interface with clients, subcontractors, regulators, and other key stakeholders

  • Implement best-practice project controls, risk management, and reporting frameworks

  • Lead project and client meetings, resolve technical queries, and oversee change management

  • Contribute to the development of project proposals, business development, and bid presentations

  • Drive a "Safety by Design" culture and technical excellence across all teams

  • Provide mentoring and performance support to junior engineers and design staff

  • Maintain compliance with internal Integrated Management Systems and design procedures

  • Contribute to continuous improvement in tools, workflows, and quality delivery



Essential Requirements

  • Degree in Electrical Engineering or a related T&D discipline

  • Minimum 7 years' experience in power engineering design project delivery

  • In-depth knowledge of CDM Regulations and Principal Designer duties

  • Strong understanding of NEC contract family and UK construction legislation

  • Prior experience working on National Grid projects (with familiarity across TP106, TP137, TP141, TP153 etc.)

  • Proficiency in MS Office and MS Project

  • Proven stakeholder management and leadership capability across complex multi-disciplinary projects

  • UK-based with willingness to travel (up to 50%)

  • Health & Safety qualification (e.g. IOSH, NEBOSH, or NVQ Level 3 H&S)
