The Opportunity:

Laing O'Rourke has an opportunity for an electrically biased Senior Design Manager to join the team supporting our Life Sciences and Healthcare portfolio across the country. The role can be based from any of our Laing O'Rourke offices including Dartford, Sale, Leeds, Newcastle, St Neots, Glasgow, and the factory in Worksop.

A Laing O'Rourke Senior Design Manager leads the delivery of effective design across multiple projects or a single large-scale project. They provide focus and leadership during the pre-construction phase, liaising with clients, the design team, in-house bid team, and operations team. On live projects, they implement processes that enable collaborative design review and risk reduction.

The Senior Design Manager is a senior member of the Design Job Family and Technical Function, ensuring technical excellence, assurance, and performance from pre-project to detailed delivery. All designers are part of our Engineering Enterprise, aiming to maximize design potential and increase project certainty.

Location:

Laing O'Rourke operates a flexible working policy. Staff are generally based at their regular place of work, either on projects or in offices of clients, delivery partners, or suppliers. Some remote work may be possible by agreement depending on project requirements.

Role responsibilities include:

• Leading pre-construction briefing and design processes.
• Managing design procedures, linking commercial, construction, and design teams.
• Facilitating collaborative design review processes.
• Managing design information production, control, and distribution.
• Reporting on design progress.
• Reviewing design information for buildability, safety, maintainability, compliance, and technical suitability.
• Promoting innovation in design management and practices.
• Aligning activities with the company's vision and values.

Technical capabilities required:

• Creating and owning the design brief.
• Design for Manufacture and Assembly.
• Information and Change Control.
• Design compliance.

Skills & experience:

• Experience in Healthcare or Life Sciences sectors.
• First degree in Electrical Engineering or relevant construction-related qualification with design experience.
• Approximately 10 years' experience, sector specialization, and international project experience.
