The Opportunity:

Laing O'Rourke has an opportunity for an Electrically biased Senior Design Manager to join the team supporting our Life Sciences and Healthcare portfolio across the country. The role can be based at any of our Laing O'Rourke offices, including Dartford, Sale, Leeds, Newcastle, St Neots, Glasgow, and the factory in Worksop.

A Laing O'Rourke Senior Design Manager leads the delivery of effective design across multiple projects or a large-scale project. They focus on leading the pre-construction phase design processes, liaising with the client, design team, in-house bid team, and operations team. On live projects, they implement processes that enable collaborative design review and risk reduction.

The Senior Design Manager is a senior member of the Design Job Family and Technical Function, ensuring technical excellence, assurance, and performance from pre-project engagement through to detailed delivery. All designers are part of our Engineering Enterprise, which aims to maximize the potential of design to increase project certainty.

Where will you be based?

Laing O'Rourke promotes flexible working; however, staff are generally expected to be based at their regular place of work, whether on a project site, in an office, or at a client or partner location. Working from home is possible by agreement, depending on project requirements.

What will the role look like?

1. Leading pre-construction briefing and design processes.
2. Managing design management procedures, acting as a link between commercial, construction, and design teams.
3. Facilitating collaborative design review and interrogation processes.
4. Managing the production, control, and distribution of design information across project stages.
5. Reporting on design progress regularly.
6. Reviewing design information for buildability, safety, maintainability, compliance, and technical suitability.
7. Promoting innovation in design management and practices.
8. Supporting the promotion of the company's vision and values in all design activities.

What skills & experience are we looking for?

• Experience in Healthcare or Life Sciences sectors.
• First degree in Electrical Engineering or related qualification with design experience.
• Approximately 10 years of experience, including sector specialization, managing design for construction or building services projects, possibly international experience.
