The Opportunity:

Laing O'Rourke has an opportunity for an Electrically biased Senior Design Manager to join our team supporting the Life Sciences and Healthcare portfolio across the country. The role can be based from any of our Laing O'Rourke offices including Dartford, Sale, Leeds, Newcastle, St Neots, Glasgow, and the factory in Worksop.

A Laing O'Rourke Senior Design Manager leads the delivery of effective design across multiple projects or a single large-scale project. They focus on leading pre-construction phase design processes, liaising with clients, the design team, in-house bid team, and operations team. On live projects, they implement and lead processes that enable collaborative design review and risk reduction.

The Senior Design Manager is a senior member of the Design Job Family and Technical Function, ensuring technical excellence, assurance, and performance across projects from pre-project to detailed delivery. All our designers are part of our Engineering Enterprise, aiming to maximize and realize design potential to increase project certainty.

Where will you be based?

Laing O'Rourke operates a flexible working policy. Generally, staff are required to be based at their regular place of work, whether on projects or in offices of clients, delivery partners, or suppliers. Some remote work is possible by agreement, depending on project needs.

What will the role look like?

  • Leading pre-construction briefing and design processes.
  • Managing design management procedures, linking commercial, construction, and design teams throughout projects.
  • Implementing processes for collaborative design review and risk management.
  • Managing production, control, and distribution of design information at various project stages.
  • Reporting on design progress regularly.
  • Reviewing design information for buildability, safety, maintainability, compliance, and technical suitability.
  • Promoting innovation in design management, methodology, processes, and practices.
  • Supporting the promotion of the company's vision and values in all design activities.

  • Creating and owning the design brief.
  • Design optimization.
  • Design for Manufacture and Assembly.
  • Managing consultancies.
  • Information and Change Control.
  • Design compliance.

What skills & experience are we looking for?

  • Experience in Healthcare or Life Sciences sectors.
  • First degree in Electrical Engineering or relevant construction/design qualification.
  • Approximately 10 years of experience managing design in construction or building services projects, possibly with international experience.
