Job summary

Murphy is hiring a Senior Design Manager to join the Energy Team on the National Grid, ETP Framework in Cardiff and South Wales. The role focuses on leading the design delivery for substations within major transmission projects, coordinating internal and external teams and ensuring CDM 2015 compliance while driving design excellence.

You will contribute to tender stages, ECIs, and the development of robust design management processes, supporting programme delivery and client requirements.

Qualifications

• Experience managing multi-disciplinary design packages on power, transmission, or major civils projects.
• Experience as Principal Designer Representative under CDM 2015.
• Experience delivering substations for UK transmission operators is desirable.
• Membership of a UK Engineering institute.

Responsibilities

• Lead the engineering design delivery of National Grid 400kV and 132kV substation projects.
• Lead design management requirements at tender and Early Contractor Engagement stages.
• Integrate HV Plant, Protection and Control, HV Cables, Overhead Lines and Civils from internal and external designers and OEMs.
• Act as Principal Design Representative to ensure design information is managed per CDM 2015 and role requirements.
• Contribute to continual process improvement in Design Management within the Business Unit and Group.
• Review design packs for technical compliance and completeness.
• Develop and assist project planners with maintaining the design and engineering aspects of programmes.
• Monitor design and procurement interfaces to expedite services and equipment.
• Coordinate with Temporary Works Coordinators and Designers on constructability and permanent works.

A day in the life of a Murphy Senior Design Manager:

• Lead the engineering design delivery of existing major National Grid 400kV and 132kV Substation new build project
• Lead Design Management requirements at tender and/or Early Contractor Engagement stage and allocate resources as appropriate during tender, FEED, and detailed design stages.
• Integrate multiple engineering disciplines including HV Plant, Protection and Control, HV Cables, Overhead Lines and Civils from a combination of internal and external designers and OEMs.
• Where applicable undertake the role of Principal Design Representative on project(s) ensuring design information is being suitable managed to the various roles and compliant with the requirements of CDM 2015 Regulations
• Involvement in the development of Business Unit and Group Design Management continual process improvement activities
• Review design pack submissions as required for technical compliance, quality and completeness.
• Develop and assist the project Planners with maintaining the design and engineering aspect of programmes.
• Monitor and expedite key engineering programme issues including the procurement of services and equipment to the Business Unit Procurement function.
• Review and liaise with internal Temporary Works Coordinators and Designers to ensure appropriate consideration of constructability and required permanent works.
• Manage compliance with Standards and Client requirements and assist in monitoring to ensure working to standard requirements.
• Ensure an understanding of, and an influence on the contracts Design Consultants are working under including their fees, schedule of services, programme, and liabilities and warranties.
• Review and comment the payment applications from consultants and pass to the contract surveyor for processing and payment.

• Experience of delivery of substation projects for UK Transmission Service Operators (SSEN, National Grid, Scottish Power Energy Networks, NIE Networks) is desirable.
• Membership of a UK Engineering institute
