Murphy is recruiting for a Senior Design Engineer - HV Plant to work with Murphy Applied Engineering. This role can be based out of Cannock, Kentish Town - London, or Stone Cross - Warrington.

A day in the life of a Murphy Senior Design Engineer
- Work with the Principal Engineer (HV Plant) to prepare 3D models of substation HV plant layouts for new builds and extensions up to 400kV.
- Prepare technical specifications for electrical plant items such as circuit breakers, disconnectors, earth switches, and instrument transformers for Air Insulated and Gas Insulated switchgear.
- Review OEM quotations and documentation for compliance and integrate these into the designs. Prepare detailed drawings using AutoCAD, including layout, elevations, earthing, and mechanical interlocking schemes as per client specifications.
- Collaborate with Assistant Engineers and CAD operators to prepare Design Packages for client review and construction, ensuring quality standards.
- Provide technical support during construction and commissioning, including responding to site queries and preparing modifications to rectify design errors or meet functional requirements.
- Coordinate with other sections of the substation engineering team for effective multidisciplinary project collaboration.
- Promote best practices in health, safety, and environmental matters with the SHQE department.
- Supervise and mentor assistant engineers, apprentices, and CAD operators as needed.
- Support tenders, drive innovation, and develop cost-effective substation solutions alongside senior engineering staff.
- Work with Operations and Site Management to produce construction methodologies and related plans.
- Develop knowledge of National Grid Specifications to apply for TP137 Contractor Design Approval when required.
Candidate Requirements
- Experience in HV Electrical Plant layout design – minimum 3-4 years.
- Understanding of electrical plant principles and instrument transformers.
- Knowledge of protection and control interfaces for AIS and GIS substations.
- Familiarity with National Grid technical specifications.
- Proficiency in Revit, Navisworks (or similar 3D systems), and AutoCAD.
