Senior Design Engineer

We're looking for a Senior Design Engineer to lead and develop a talented design team in Crewe. Reporting directly to the Managing Director, this role is ideal for a proactive professional with strong technical expertise and proven experience in rail civil engineering projects.

About the Role:

As Senior Design Engineer, you'll play a key role in delivering high-quality, compliant, and safe design solutions across rail – Civil and Structural. You’ll manage the full design lifecycle—from feasibility studies through to project close-out—while mentoring junior engineers and contributing to continual improvement across the business.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the delivery of design projects within time and budget constraints
  • Produce and check design documentation including drawings, reports, specifications, and risk assessments
  • Undertake site inspections, surveys, and investigations
  • Champion compliance with British and European Standards, CDM 2015, and Safe by Design principles
  • Act as Contractors Responsible Engineer (CRE) where required
  • Support business development by attending client meetings and representing the company
  • Mentor, train, and manage junior members of the team

The ideal candidate:

  • Degree (or equivalent) in Civil Engineering or related subject
  • Membership of a relevant professional institution (ICE, IStructE, PWI, etc.)
  • Strong understanding of the railway environment and civil engineering design delivery
  • Demonstrated experience leading or managing design teams
  • Knowledge of relevant safety legislation and standards
  • PTS card (or ability to obtain)
  • Excellent communication, problem-solving, and organisational skills

Desirable:

  • Chartered Engineer (CEng) status
  • CAD proficiency and experience with electronic project systems
  • Qualifications such as NEBOSH, IOSH Managing Safely, or First Aid at Work
  • BIM awareness or experience
