This is a remote position.

Senior Database Specialist - Microsoft SQL Server

Immediate start, 12 months contract.

Location: remote with a requirement to travel and work on-site either in Switzerland (Zürich) or Spain (Madrid) for approximately one week every five weeks.

As part of a Cloud/Backfill project, our large trading client is looking for a Senior DBA SQL Server to join an international team in Europe. The ideal candidate will have 5-7+ years of senior level DBA experience supporting production applications on Microsoft’s SQL Server platform in high-pressure environments such as trading.

The Role

• Operate, manage & support on-premise & cloud-based Microsoft SQL Server solutions (Azure)
• Implement and advise on industry standard, best practice, and creative database solutions
• Work closely with Operations, Development, and Business teams to identify operational & performance issues
• Participate in testing, delivery, and deployment of database improvements through the software development lifecycle into production
• Use internal and external monitoring tools to identify trends in system performance
• Proactively lead and resolve database problems and incidents
• Implement alerting and processes to prevent and identify database issues, reducing operational and business impact
• Document and share knowledge to increase the technical understanding of teams
• Communicate and cooperate with vendors on issue resolution
• Work collaboratively with cross-functional teams to achieve goals
• Advise, influence, and mentor Development and Operations teams on database topics

Requirements

• Senior level DBA SQL Server experience (5-7+ years) supporting production applications in high-pressure environments
• Experience with on-premise to Azure cloud database migrations
• Experience with current and previous versions of SQL Server database engines
• High availability and disaster recovery through Availability Groups
• Production system monitoring across all levels of the technology stack
• SQL Performance tuning, including T-SQL best practices
• Additional skills such as Microsoft’s BI toolset (Analysis Services, Reporting Services, Integration Services, PowerBI) are a plus
• Exposure to other database technologies, such as Azure PostgreSQL
• Experience automating tasks using PowerShell or community solutions like DBATools
• Knowledge of DevOps principles & tools
• Understanding of ITIL standards and service delivery principles
