Job description
Overview

We are seeking an experienced and highly motivated Senior Database Administrator to be part of our database team. Ensuring the optimal performance, security, and reliability of our data systems. In this critical role, you will manage the architecture, deployment, and maintenance of our databases, supporting the data needs of the entire organisation. In addition, as a Senior Database Administrator within the NCA, you will assume a crucial role in the management and optimisation of database infrastructure essential for healthcare operations.

Your primary responsibility will be to lead the design, implementation, and maintenance of database systems across NCA sites. This includes managing the deployment of database servers, storage systems, and associated infrastructure components, ensuring alignment with NHS standards and industry best practices. You will provide technical leadership and support in diagnosing and resolving database issues and incidents efficiently, guiding digital team members in identifying root causes and implementing solutions to minimize downtime and disruptions to healthcare services.

In addition to providing technical leadership, you will play a key role in implementing advanced security measures to protect database environments and sensitive data, including access controls, encryption technologies, and monitoring systems to mitigate cyber security risks and ensure compliance with NHS security policies and regulations.

The Northern Care Alliance NHS Foundation Trust (NCA) provides hospital and integrated health and social care services to over one million people living across Greater Manchester. Our 20,000 colleagues care for people in hospital and in the community, working across Bury, Rochdale, Oldham and Salford, to save and improve lives.

As a large NHS trust we are committed to enhancing the health of our local population by delivering consistently high standards of care and working closely with local authorities and key partners. We believe in our power and potential to make a difference and we’re always looking for people who demonstrate our three core values - care, appreciate and inspire – to join our team.

Responsibilities
  • Lead the design, implementation, and maintenance of database systems across NCA sites, including deploying database servers, storage systems, and associated infrastructure, ensuring alignment with NHS standards and industry best practices.
  • Provide technical leadership and support in diagnosing and resolving database issues and incidents, guiding digital team members to identify root causes and minimize downtime and disruptions to healthcare services.
  • Implement advanced security measures to protect database environments and sensitive data (access controls, encryption technologies, monitoring systems) to mitigate cyber security risks and ensure compliance with NHS policies.
Qualifications
  • Experience as a Database Administrator with senior responsibilities; strong knowledge of database technologies, architecture, performance tuning, security, and backup/recovery strategies.
  • Experience with NHS/NCA standards is desirable. Ability to lead technical teams and communicate effectively with stakeholders.
Benefits

In return, we can offer you a job role with purpose and flexibility. The size and scale of the NCA means we can provide more challenge and opportunities so your career can always be moving in the right direction. By joining us you can also access a competitive benefits package, including a fantastic annual leave allowance, flexible working opportunities and protected hours for health and wellbeing activities, helping you to achieve more personal downtime and a better work-life balance.
