Job summary

ByteHire is recruiting a Database Administrator to oversee production databases and drive architecture improvements. The role combines operational DB management with strategic enhancements in a SaaS, cloud-native setting.

Work involves collaborating with development and infrastructure teams in a hybrid environment, ensuring security, performance and reliability across multiple environments.

Qualifications

  • Proven experience administering MySQL or MariaDB in production.
  • Strong SQL optimisation, indexing, and query analysis skills.
  • Experience with HA, replication, and disaster recovery planning.
  • Experience with AWS or other cloud platforms.
  • Experience with SaaS or cloud-native platforms.
  • Ability to work in Agile software delivery teams.

Responsibilities

  • Administer and maintain production database platforms across environments.
  • Ensure databases are secure, resilient, and highly available.
  • Plan and execute upgrades, maintenance, and backups.
  • Monitor system health and resolve performance issues promptly.
  • Optimise queries and indexing to improve app responsiveness.
  • Collaborate with developers on database changes through the lifecycle.
  • Support capacity planning and future architecture improvements.
  • Produce technical documentation and contribute to standards
  • Participate in incident investigations and root cause analysis.
  • Contribute within Agile delivery teams.

Permanent Salary: up to £70,000 per annum

Location: Remote (1 day per month in the Edinburgh office)

About The Role:

Our client is seeking an experienced Database Administrator to oversee the performance, stability, and ongoing development of a business-critical database environment. This position combines operational database management with strategic improvements, giving the successful candidate the opportunity to influence data architecture, platform scalability, and engineering best practices while working alongside development and infrastructure teams.

Key Responsibilities
  • Administer and maintain production database platforms across multiple environments.
  • Ensure databases remain secure, resilient, and highly available.
  • Plan and execute upgrades, maintenance activities, and backup strategies.
  • Monitor system health and resolve performance issues before they impact users.
  • Optimise SQL queries and indexing strategies to improve application responsiveness.

Essential Experience & Technical Skills
  • Administration of MySQL or MariaDB production environments

  • Supporting business-critical SaaS applications
  • Database security, permissions, and encryption
  • Experience with AWS or other cloud platforms.
  • Data warehousing or analytical databases.
  • Experience with database scaling techniques such as replication, partitioning, sharding, caching, or proxying.
  • Exposure to NoSQL, graph, or time-series databases.
  • Experience supporting SaaS or cloud-native platforms.
  • Exposure to backend development technologies such as PHP
