The opportunity

Harvard Business Publishing (HBP) is seeking an experienced data scientist with a machine learning background to develop data-driven features and support strategic decision making. This role will contribute to HBP's next generation of edtech and media products and support data initiatives across the organization.

The initial focus of the role will be supporting our first customer-facing chatbot by measuring performance, identifying product development opportunities based on user inquiries, and partnering with our engineering team to enhance functionality.

What you'll do
  1. Conduct data science research and build ML models for various applications, including Agentic GenAI applications, understanding HBP's content library for customer-facing and internal use cases, and personalizing media and learning products.
  2. Participate in prototyping, software implementation, monitoring, and maintenance of user-facing and internal data products.
  3. Perform data analyses to support decision-making, communicating findings and recommendations to stakeholders.
  4. Engage in ETL development (dbt), dashboard creation (Tableau), and A/B testing.
  5. Collaborate with cross-functional teams to define data needs and influence product roadmaps.
  6. Stay updated on ML/AI literature and practices to identify opportunities for model improvements.
  7. Identify opportunities to apply data science and analytics across HBP.
What we're looking for
  1. 5+ years of data science research experience, with a focus on machine learning and statistical analysis.
  2. Strong understanding of algorithms underlying various statistical and machine learning models relevant to information retrieval, GenAI, NLP, and personalization.
  3. Proficiency in Python programming, including deploying machine learning models to production.
  4. Practicality, a bias for action, and comfort with ambiguity.
  5. Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to draw robust conclusions from data.
  6. Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
  7. Experience with personalization of media and learning products.
  8. Experience with prototyping, software implementation, monitoring, and maintenance of data products.
  9. Experience with data analysis for decision support and stakeholder communication.
  10. Experience with ETL development (dbt), dashboard development (Tableau), and A/B testing.
  11. Ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams and influence product development.
  12. Commitment to staying current with ML/AI literature and practices.
  13. Ability to identify and support application of data science across HBP.
