Job summary

Derbyshire Support and Facilities Services Limited invites applications for a data science specialist role within EM-ACE. You will lead analytics work packages from discovery to deployment, balancing technical delivery with user-centred problem solving and stakeholder engagement.

You will design robust analytical code, models and documentation within FDP-aligned environments, ensuring outputs are reproducible and clinically meaningful for reuse across EMAP organisations.

Qualifications

• Masters level qualification or equivalent experience in a relevant numerical, analytical, scientific or digital discipline.
• PhD or postgraduate training in data science, statistics, operational research or health informatics.
• Professional registration or active membership of AphA, AnalystX, NHS-R, nhs.pycom or similar.

Job overview

The post holder will operate as a specialist data scientist within EM-ACE, leading defined analytics and
modelling work packages from discovery through to deployment, evaluation and reuse.
The role will combine strong technical delivery with user-centred problem solving, stakeholder communication
and coaching of others. The post holder will design and maintain robust analytical code, models and
documentation within FDP-aligned environments, ensuring that outputs are reproducible, clinically and
operationally meaningful, and capable of adaptation across EMAP organisations.

Person specification

Qualifications

• Masters level qualification or equivalent experience in a relevant numerical, analytical, scientific, informatics or digital discipline. Evidence of continuing professional development.
• PhD or additional postgraduate training in data science, statistics, operational research, computer science, health informatics or related discipline. Professional registration or active membership of AphA, AnalystX, NHS-R, nhs.pycom or similar.

Data science experience

• Experience applying data science techniques to real world datasets, such as machine learning, time series forecasting, statistical modelling, simulation, causal inference, NLP, risk adjustment or optimisation.
• Experience applying data science to healthcare datasets, especially acute provider activity, patient flow, outpatients, ED, waiting lists, inequalities, population health or operational recovery.

Coding and technical delivery

• Strong practical competence in Python, R, SQL or similar, including debugging, data manipulation, analysis, visualisation and model development. Experience using Git collaboratively.
• Experience with FDP/Foundry, cloud platforms, APIs, data engineering tools, feature pipelines, automated testing, packaging or deployment of analytical products.

RAP, software engineering and documentation

• Experience creating reusable, version-controlled, well documented analytical code, with clear methodology and quality assurance.
• Experience publishing code, creating shared libraries, developing training material, or leading RAP adoption in an analytical team.

Model validation and evaluation

• Ability to design validation approaches, interpret performance, quantify uncertainty and explain model limitations for decision-making.
• Experience with model monitoring, model cards, algorithmic impact assessment, clinical safety, economic evaluation or formal benefits realisation.

Communication and stakeholder influence

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Able to present complex analysis to technical and non technical stakeholders, including senior audiences.
• Experience communicating contentious analytical findings, negotiating scope or influencing operational change using evidence.

Leadership and coaching

• Able to mentor, coach or supervise junior analysts/data scientists and contribute to a collaborative technical culture.
• Experience line managing staff, leading a community of practice, coordinating code review or setting team standards.

Planning and organisation

• Able to manage concurrent work packages, prioritise, adapt to changing requirements and deliver usable outputs to agreed timescales.
• Experience working in agile/product delivery, multidisciplinary teams, hackathons or rapid improvement cycles.

Ethics, IG and values

• Strong understanding of data protection, confidentiality, Caldicott principles and ethical data science in health and care.
• Evidence of work addressing fairness, bias, explainability, accessibility, inequalities or public/patient impact.
