Job summary

Sandwell Council is seeking a Senior Data Compliance Assistant to join the Registration, Data Compliance and Electoral Services Team. You will support the council’s information governance framework, offering guidance on data protection, FOI, SARs and related inquiries.

You will work with the Senior Data Compliance Officer to ensure statutory obligations are met, prepare records and reports, and help develop information governance processes while supervising junior staff as needed.

Qualifications

• Degree educated or equivalent qualification, or a minimum of five years' experience working within Data Compliance services.
• Sound understanding of Local Authority Data Compliance Services.
• Experience and knowledge of Freedom of Information, Data Protection and Subject Access Request legislation.
• Excellent organisational, analytical and decision-making skills.
• Ability to interpret legislation and complex reports and provide clear advice.
• Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team.
• Experience of supervising or supporting the work of others.

Responsibilities

• Providing advice, guidance and support on data compliance matters across the Council.
• Managing and advising on Subject Access Requests, Freedom of Information Requests, Environmental Information Regulation Requests and Data Protection Act enquiries.
• Supporting investigations into data protection breaches on behalf of the Data Protection Officer. Assisting with responses to the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO).
• Preparing reports, records and legal documentation as required.
• Attending conferences with Counsel and preparing briefs and supporting documentation where necessary.
• Supporting the development and implementation of information governance systems and processes.
• Supervising and providing guidance to junior members of staff as required.
• Promoting a culture of Equality, Diversity and Inclusion throughout the service.
