The opportunity:

The International Portfolio Analytics (IPA) team sits across all International Divisions within the Markel International Wholesale business which operates across London and Asian platforms. It is embedded within the underwriting business and is represented within the Wholesale Leadership Team. Its focus is on the areas that are critical to achieve profitability and performance targets for a specialty lines insurer: Data, Analytics and Insights, Portfolio Management and Pricing Model development.

The IPA team provides support to the following Divisions within Markel Wholesale:

  • Cyber writes many differing types of business and industry areas for cyber coverage.
  • Energy provides coverage on a worldwide basis for all aspects of upstream, midstream and downstream oil and gas activities as well as renewable energy.
  • Equine provides coverage for Bloodstock and Livestock risks worldwide.
  • Marine provides coverage for liability, hull, war, terrorism, specie and cargo risks worldwide.
  • Professional and Financial Risks (PFR) underwrites business worldwide and covers traditional and emerging professional indemnity, management liability, financial institutions as well as specialist risk areas such as patents and libel & slander.
  • Trade Credit, Political Risk and Surety (TCPRS) underwrites a variety of trade and investment-related risks using expert knowledge of commercial counterparty and country risks across a wide variety of trade sectors and geographies.
  • International Casualty provides coverage for Environmental Liability, General Liability, Life Science and Clinical Trials

The primary function of this position is to assist in providing valuable insights, solutions, services and operational improvements across MINT Wholesale through the use of data & insights. This will mainly include working to improve and augment underwriting and claims enabling data driven decision making. It will also include creating business MI for the various other support functions within MINT Wholesale.

Activities include data analysis, automation of data flows, creating tooling and visualisation solutions.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Develop business analytics solutions across all areas of the Wholesale division, supporting the Data, Analytics and Insights pillar in International Portfolio Analytics.
  • Design and implement automated data solutions. Be an advocate for the use of data to support data driven decision making.
  • Develop data models to enable smarter underwriting and claims decisions that will augment existing processes.
  • Strong understanding of insurance data models, including policy, claims, and risk-related data, with hands-on experience in Verisk Impact and Eclipse systems.
  • Collaborate with IT teamsto integrate new systems and technologies into the data ecosystem.
  • Maintain and work with data engineering team on cloud-based data platforms
  • Source new data and create conformed views of data in the IPA Data Analytics Cloud Platform.
  • Ensure data quality, integrity, and governance across all systems.
  • Be willing to learn new technologies and become an SME to the IPA team and where necessary Wholesale.
  • Represent the IPA team, as appropriate, providing accurate and timely management information to MINT leadership, wholesale leadership and meetings as the need arises.
  • Proven experience in data engineering within theinsurance sector, ideally theLondon Market.
  • Work with other functional areas to include but not limited to: actuarial, IT, finance, Office of the CUO , legal and regulatory, compliance, credit control, reinsurance, delegated and underwriting support services to resolve issues and support the achievement of IPA and wholesale business priorities.
  • Desirable to have business intelligence knowledge in Power BI.

Our must-haves:

  • Experience withAzure Cloud Services(e.g. Data Factory, Databricks, Key Vault, Az SQL).
  • Knowledge ofdata warehousingmethodology(e.g., Kimball and Inmon).
  • Database development: Be able to transform and summarise data in T-SQL. Knowledge of database maintenance and administration a plus.
  • Data pipelines: Python a plus.
  • Automation: Have a process improvement mindset. Have demonstrated implementing process automation.
  • Excel: Possess a thorough working knowledge Excel and be comfortable with manipulating, analysing and visualising large, complex sets of data.
  • Have demonstrable experience in influencing and engaging with stakeholders using effective communication and ensuring buy-in.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Organised with ability to multi-task
  • Adaptable and comfortable with fast pace and shifting priorities
