Job summary

Pacific Life Re is seeking a Senior Data Engineer to define and deliver an enterprise data platform and governance. You will work with the divisional data team to prioritise data engineering tasks and build a data warehouse delivering reporting outputs for internal customers.

The role focuses on data integration, modelling, testing, and project delivery across geographies, reporting to the Data Engineering Manager. A strong background in SQL, ETL, and BI tooling is essential.

Qualifications

  • Proven experience in the market as a SQL and PLSQL developer.
  • Extensive experience with SQL cloud databases such as Snowflake, Redshift, BigQuery or Azure SQL.
  • Experience with ETL tools like Matillion, SNP Glue, Fivetran or Informatica.
  • Azure DevOps experience is a plus.
  • Knowledge of data modeling, data curation, and orchestration.
  • Experience with BI tools like PowerBI is a plus.
  • Understanding of testing approaches and performance considerations.
  • Knowledge of at least one shell scripting language.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder collaboration skills.
  • Knowledge of reinsurance or insurance concepts is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the data engineer manager with the delivery of data engineering activities.
  • Prepare technical design specifications based on functional requirements and analysis documents.
  • Implement, test, maintain, and support software, as outlined in technical design specifications.
  • Enhance system quality through identification of issues and standard operating procedures.
  • Identify and implement opportunities for system enhancements.
  • Support Business Control compliance through technology and IT Controls.
  • Maintain and improve existing codebases and conduct peer code reviews.
  • Liaise with team members to implement technical designs.
  • Investigate and utilize new technologies as relevant.
  • Review requirements and provide pertinent feedback.
  • Provide technical support to customers and resolve queries.
  • Mentor other developers and provide technical assistance as needed.
  • Participate in architecture and code reviews.
  • Support testing and validation activities in data projects.

Job Title Senior Data Engineer Job Description

Following extensive global expansion over several years and a drive to standardise common systems and platforms globally, PL Re is undertaking a major back‑office transformation programme and has established a Divisional Data Team to develop and manage an enterprise-wide data solution, reporting services and to embed best practice data governance. This team will support the business throughout its back‑office transformation and will deliver significant improvement in efficiencies and the value derived from our data assets globally. We are looking to appoint a Senior data engineer; to support the definition and delivery of an enterprise data platform with engineering best practices. Specifically, this role will help the divisional data team (DDT) to understand, manage, and prioritise data engineering and transformation activities. The role is reporting to the Data engineering manager, who is responsible for prioritising, planning, and development of the data engineering and transformation tasks required. This role holder will build close working relationships with the DDT team and business units across our operating geographies and will be responsible for ensuring that technical requirements are clearly understood throughout the project lifecycle, and develop a data warehouse that empowers delivering reporting outputs that meet the needs of our internal customers. This is an exciting opportunity to join this new team. The Data transformation analyst would fill a critical role within the organisation tasked with analysis, design, implementation, testing, maintenance, and support for data-intensive pipelines. Also, would play an integral role in enhancing system quality, identifying issues, and transforming applications through innovation. Duties
  • Assist the data engineer manager with the delivery of data engineering activities.
  • Prepare technical design specifications based on functional requirements and analysis documents.
  • Implement, test, maintain, and support software, as outlined in technical design specifications.
  • Enhance system quality through identification of issues, common patterns, and formulation of standard operating procedures.
  • Identify and implement opportunities for system enhancements.
  • Working to support Business Control compliance through technology and responsible for ensuring IT Controls are incorporated into Systems.
  • Maintain and improve existing codebases and conduct peer code review changes.
  • Liaise with team members to implement technical designs.
  • Investigate and utilize new technologies as relevant.
  • Review functional requirements, analysis, and design documents to provide pertinent feedback.
  • Provide technical support to customers, solving problems and answering queries.
  • Mentor other development staff members and provide technical assistance as needed.
  • Participate in architecture and code reviews.
  • Support testing and validation activities within data related projects and initiatives.
Qualifications & Experience
  • Proven experience in the market as a SQL and PLSQL developer.
  • Extensive experience with any SQL cloud databases like Snowflake/Redshift/ BigQuery/Azure SQL database. Experience with any on-premise SQL database like MS SQL Server, Teradata etc.
  • Clear understanding of one ETL tool (For eg: Matillion, SNP Glue, Fivetran, Informatica).
  • Azure DevOps experience is a plus.
  • Clear understanding of data modeling, data curation, and orchestration
  • Experience with Business Intelligence tools like PowerBI is a plus.
  • Sound understanding of unit testing, test-driven development, functional testing, and performance aspects.
  • Knowledge of at least one shell scripting language.
  • Ability to network with key contacts outside of own expertise.
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, presentation and facilitation skills.
  • Must demonstrate result-orientation and customer-focused mindset.
  • Strong organizational skills are required.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills enabling efficient interaction and collaboration with all stakeholders.
  • Knowledge of reinsurance or insurance industry concepts is a plus.
