Senior Data Engineer

Role: Senior Data Engineer

About The Role

Our client, a leading organisation in the financial services sector, is looking for a Senior Data Engineer to join its engineering function in Burgess Hill. This is a hands-on role for an experienced database engineer who thrives on working alongside application teams and data architects to design, deliver and run resilient, secure and highly automated data platforms.

This is not a traditional DBA-only position. You will be involved from the start of new initiatives, shaping database migrations, modernisation programmes and production deployments.

Key Responsibilities

• Engineer, deploy and support enterprise database platforms, with a focus on Oracle and PostgreSQL, and NoSQL technologies including Cassandra, MongoDB and/or Couchbase.
• Lead performance tuning, schema deployment and troubleshooting across enterprise environments.
• Design and implement high availability, resilience and security controls for critical data services.
• Automate database provisioning and deployments using Ansible, Terraform, Python/Shell, Infrastructure as Code, Git and CI/CD pipelines.
• Partner closely with application teams and data architects on new initiatives, database migrations, modernisation and production releases.
• Contribute to engineering standards, best practice and knowledge sharing across the team.

Essential Skills And Experience

• Proven senior, hands-on experience as a Data/Database Engineer.
• Strong expertise in Oracle and PostgreSQL.
• Practical experience with Cassandra, MongoDB and/or Couchbase.
• Strong background in database engineering, performance tuning, schema deployment, high availability, resilience, security and troubleshooting.
• Strong automation and DevOps mindset, with experience of Ansible, Terraform, Python/Shell, Infrastructure as Code, Git and CI/CD.
