Job Description:
Summary
Yelp's engineering culture emphasizes collaboration, authenticity, and creative problem-solving. New engineers deploy working code within their first week, and the company supports individual growth through mentorship and teamwork. The goal is to help users, grow as engineers, and enjoy a collaborative environment.
Yelp’s mission to connect people with great local businesses relies on scalable data infrastructure and backend systems. As a Senior Data Backend Engineer on the Content and Contributor Intelligence team, you will build data platforms and services powering innovative features, including review insights, business summaries, and conversational search driven by GenAI technologies.
You will collaborate with machine learning engineers to design and implement robust, scalable systems that process and serve data at scale. Your work may involve streaming real-time content signals, building APIs for ML models, or managing large-scale distributed data stores, directly impacting the Yelp user experience.
This position requires you to be located in the United Kingdom. We encourage you to apply even if you don’t meet every requirement, as Yelp values great potential and fit over ticking all boxes.
What you'll do:
- Design, build, and maintain scalable backend systems and data pipelines supporting ML-powered features across Yelp’s app.
- Collaborate with ML engineers to integrate LLM-based models and content embeddings into production services.
- Work with large-scale distributed systems and databases (e.g., Cassandra, SQL/NoSQL) to manage and serve structured and unstructured data.
- Develop and maintain APIs and services for features like Review Insights, Business Summaries, and Conversational Search.
- Build real-time and batch data processing pipelines using Kafka, Flink, Spark.
- Ensure high availability, performance, and reliability of backend systems in production.
- Contribute to engineering best practices and mentor junior engineers.
What it takes to succeed:
- Strong backend engineering experience, preferably in Python, Java, or C++.
- Proficiency with SQL and NoSQL databases, including Cassandra.
- Experience with real-time data streaming technologies such as Kafka and Flink.
- Familiarity with large-scale data processing frameworks like Spark.
- Understanding of API design, service-oriented architecture, and system reliability.
- Collaborative mindset and ability to work with cross-functional teams including ML engineers.
- Curiosity and initiative to learn new technologies and develop impactful solutions.
What you'll get:
- Ownership of projects from day one, in a collaborative environment.
- Competitive salary, pension scheme, and stock purchase plan.
- 25 days paid holiday (rising to 29), plus a floating holiday.
- £150 monthly reimbursement for remote work expenses.
- £81 caregiver reimbursement for dependent care.
- Private health insurance, including dental and vision.
- Flexible working hours and meeting-free Wednesdays.
- Regular hackathons, learning groups, and career development support.
- Opportunities for digital events and conferences.
- £81 monthly wellness expense allowance.
- Quarterly team offsites.
We look forward to your application!
