Job Description:

Summary

Yelp engineering culture is driven by our values: we’re a cooperative team that values individual authenticity and encourages creative solutions to problems. All new engineers deploy working code their first week, and we strive to broaden individual impact with support from managers, mentors, and teams. At the end of the day, we’re all about helping our users, growing as engineers, and having fun in a collaborative environment.

Yelp’s mission to connect people with great local businesses relies on powerful data infrastructure and backend systems that can scale across millions of users and businesses. As a Senior Data Backend Engineer on the Content and Contributor Intelligence team, you will play a key role in building data platforms and services that power some of Yelp’s most innovative GenAI-driven features, from review insights and business summaries to conversational search experiences.

You will work closely with machine learning engineers to design and implement robust, scalable systems that process and serve data at scale. Whether it’s streaming real-time content signals, building APIs for ML models, or managing large-scale distributed data stores, your work will directly impact the consumer experience on Yelp.

This opportunity requires you to be located in the United Kingdom. We encourage you to apply even if you don’t meet every single requirement. At Yelp, we value great people over checklists.

What you'll do:

  1. Design, build, and maintain scalable backend systems and data pipelines that support ML-powered features across Yelp’s consumer app.
  2. Collaborate with ML engineers to integrate LLM-based models and content embeddings into production services.
  3. Work with large-scale distributed systems and databases (e.g., Cassandra, SQL/NoSQL) to manage and serve structured and unstructured data.
  4. Develop and maintain APIs and services that power features like Review Insights, Business Summaries, and Conversational Search.
  5. Build real-time and batch data processing pipelines using technologies like Kafka, Flink, and Spark.
  6. Ensure high availability, performance, and reliability of backend systems in a production environment.
  7. Contribute to the team’s engineering best practices and mentor junior engineers.

What it takes to succeed:

  1. Strong backend engineering experience, ideally in Python or similar languages (e.g., Java, C++).
  2. Proficiency in working with SQL and NoSQL databases, and experience with distributed data stores like Cassandra.
  3. Experience with real-time data streaming technologies such as Kafka and Flink.
  4. Familiarity with large-scale data processing frameworks like Spark.
  5. Solid understanding of API design, service-oriented architecture, and production system reliability.
  6. A collaborative mindset and the ability to work closely with ML engineers and cross-functional partners.
  7. Curiosity and initiative to explore new technologies and drive impactful solutions.

What you'll get:

  1. Full responsibility for projects from day one, a collaborative team, and a dynamic work environment.
  2. Competitive salary, a pension scheme, and an optional employee stock purchase plan.
  3. 25 days paid holiday (rising to 29 with service), plus one floating holiday.
  4. £150 monthly reimbursement to help cover remote working expenses.
  5. £81 caregiver reimbursement to support dependent care for families.
  6. Private health insurance, including dental and vision.
  7. Flexible working hours and meeting-free Wednesdays.
  8. Regular 3-day Hackathons, bi-weekly learning groups, and productivity spending to support your career growth.
  9. Opportunities to participate in digital events and conferences.
  10. £81 per month to use toward qualifying wellness expenses.
  11. Quarterly team offsites.
