Job description

Join to apply for the Senior Data Analyst role at National Grid

The energy system will continue to change rapidly and fundamentally on the path to net zero in 2050. National Grid is at the heart of these changes, which pose strategic questions for us as a business and for the wider sector. We need to move at pace and reform our energy system – to deliver energy security, tackle climate change, and protect our people.

About The Role

Group Strategy, Innovation and Market Analytics (SIMA) leads on answering high-level strategic questions for National Grid and collaborates with external stakeholders to address broader industry questions. We are seeking a proactive, knowledgeable Senior Data Analyst to join our Market Analytics team. You will conduct in-depth energy market analyses, model scenarios, quantify risks and opportunities, and lead efforts to upgrade data resources for better access and control. You will also develop data workflows to support stakeholders in modeling and decision-making.

The team combines market intelligence, energy sector expertise, and sophisticated modeling tools to provide insights that inform strategic and commercial decisions across the business.

What You'll Do

  • Develop and enhance the Market Analytics’ Snowflake database for analytical access.
  • Translate modeling requirements into data needs, upgrading existing models and enabling new tools.
  • Integrate Plexos modeling capabilities through data interfaces.
  • Create data endpoints for upstream data collection via web APIs.
  • Support data queries within Snowflake to serve modeling needs, including future ML capabilities with Snowpark.
  • Collaborate with IT and solution architects to design and implement data tools and systems.
  • Work with model owners to develop, improve, and ensure models are fit for purpose, adhering to data and coding best practices.
  • Provide ad hoc data support to cross-functional teams such as Strategy, M&A, Business Development, and Operations.
  • Mentor junior team members and support their professional growth.

About You

  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to influence and work collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Expertise in Python for data engineering, including pipelines, ETL, automation, and data modeling.
  • Experience managing databases (Snowflake preferred), including permissions, table design, and data transfers.
  • Proficiency with GitHub and agile project management.
  • Familiarity with Power BI or similar visualization tools like Streamlit.
  • Self-motivated, entrepreneurial, and responsible.
  • High-level knowledge of energy markets is advantageous.
  • Experience with optimization modeling software (e.g., PLEXOS, Aurora, BID3) is a plus.

We encourage applicants from diverse backgrounds, especially women and people of color, even if they don't meet every requirement, because we value inclusivity and potential.

What You'll Get

A competitive salary between £64,000 – £80,000, plus bonuses, a contributory pension scheme (up to 12% matching), and flexible benefits such as share plans, car schemes, and support services.

About Us

National Grid connects communities and powers lives across the UK and beyond. We’re committed to creating a sustainable energy future and value the contributions of a diverse workforce.
