In 2017, over half the population in Sub-Saharan Africa had no bank account. That's for good reason—the fees are too high, the closest branch can be miles away, and nobody takes cards. Without access to financial institutions, people are forced to keep their savings under the mattress. Small business owners rely on lenders who charge extortionate rates. Parents spend hours waiting in line to pay school fees in cash.

We're solving this by building financial services that just work: no account fees, instantly available, and accepted everywhere. In places where electricity, water and roads don't always work, you can still send money with Wave. In 2017, we launched a mobile app in Senegal for cash deposit, withdrawal, and peer-to-peer and business payments. Now, we have millions of users across six countries and are growing fast.

How You’ll Help Us Achieve It

Wave is now the largest financial institution in Senegal, with over 7 million users. And, we’re still in the early days of our product roadmap and potential impact on people’s everyday lives.

We are looking for an experienced Senior Data Analyst to join our product teams. In this role, you’ll;

• Be embedded in a product team where you will work closely with a product manager, engineers and operations leads.
• Help find, test and implement process improvements to make our operations more efficient.
• Derive insights from user, merchant and support center data, visualize and communicate these in ways that improve user and business outcomes.
• Design, develop, implement and analyze experiments related to product features and operational processes.
• Partner with Finance and Product/Data teams to build robust data systems that support financial forecasting, fund flows, and unit economics.
• Take full ownership of the analytics process and work closely with finance- from project scoping and design through communicating findings to stakeholders.
  
  

Key Details

• You can work remotely from anywhere (between UTC -5 and +2) with reliable Internet access.
• Wave covers travel once per year to one of our operating countries in Africa, as well as a yearly stipend of $1,200 to meet with coworkers.
• Our salaries are competitive and are calculated using a transparent formula. For this role, depending on your level and location, we offer a salary of up to $136,100 USD (paid in your local currency equivalent), plus a generous equity package.

• We’re hiring for multiple Senior Data Analyst roles across different functions (Finance, Customer Support). Your final scope and responsibilities will be aligned to the team you join, and clearly outlined in your offer.
  

Requirements

• Education and Experience
• 5+ years experience as a product analyst, data analyst, data scientist or similar role.
• Experience working in large operational settings ( support/call centers, fleet management, supply chain operations, retail operations etc).
• Experience working with analytics platforms such as Tableau, Looker, Periscope etc.
• Fluency in English. French is a plus.
• Technical skills
• Strong SQL skills (experience with dbt is a plus). While data architecture is not a strong requirement, having experience in it will be helpful in this role.
• Strong demonstrable experience in discovery, hypothesis testing and inference over fuzzy problems and large data sets.
• A baseline understanding of designing, running and evaluating A/B tests.
• Strong data visualization and communication skills. You’ll be working closely with operations leads so being able to communicate insights to non-technical stakeholders is a key skill we are looking for.

• Have a background in financial reporting, forecasting, or fund flows — or experience supporting finance teams in decision-making.
• Are able to work fairly independently. This role is a senior role in one of the fastest-growing parts of Wave. An expectation is that you’ll be able to lead and run with a problem (with the support of the broader team).
• Can communicate clearly with your colleagues in different roles (PM, engineers, operational leads, senior management).
• Have run a bunch of experiments and know what to do when things do not go as planned.
• Excel at choosing the right complexity of analysis for any given business problem, from simple SQL queries to complex experimentation.
• Love building resilient systems — you don’t just do one-off fixes, you help prevent issues before they arise.
