Job summary

Arup is seeking a Senior Consultant in Dangerous Goods and Process Safety to advise on complex energy, infrastructure, transport, and built environment projects across the UK and EU. You will lead DG/PS advice, deliver DSEAR/ATEX assessments, and support COMAH/Seveso-type regimes while mentoring junior colleagues.

The role blends technical expertise with client-facing advisory work, enabling independent work across jurisdictions and contributing to bids and regulatory engagements.

Qualifications

• Degree in engineering or science, or equivalent experience; postgraduate qualification desirable; chartered status with a relevant institution such as IChemE, IOSH or IMechE.
• Strong background in process safety, major hazard risk or technical safety across consultancy, operator, engineering or regulatory environments.
• Experience delivering DSEAR/ATEX, fire and explosion studies, and related risk assessments.
• Good knowledge of UK/EU dangerous goods legislation and major hazard regimes (COMAH/Seveso).

Responsibilities

• Lead dangerous goods and process safety advice on UK and EU projects.
• Deliver DSEAR and ATEX assessments, including hazardous area classification and explosion risk management.
• Support major hazard safety cases and reports, including COMAH and Seveso-type regimes.
• Lead or support quantitative consequence assessments for dispersion, fire and explosion risks.
• Advise clients on UK and EU legislation, standards and guidance.
• Plan and facilitate safety workshops (HAZID/HAZOP/bow-tie).
• Provide practical, proportionate safety advice with engineering judgement.
• Collaborate with multi-disciplinary teams to embed safety into design and delivery.
• Provide technical review, quality assurance and peer support across projects.
• Engage regulators, approving bodies and independent assessors.
• Contribute to bids, proposals and client discussions in UK/EU markets.
• Mentor junior colleagues and grow Arup’s dangerous goods capability.
