Job Description

Senior Cyber Security Analyst

Cheltenham

£44,044 (includes £2,658 non-concessionary payment)

Flexible working: We recognise the importance of a healthy work-life balance and offer full-time, part-time, and compressed hours. While hybrid working can be more restricted, due to the nature of the work, around 40% home working may be available depending on business needs.

About Us

GCHQ is an intelligence, cyber and security agency with a mission to keep the UK safe. We use cutting-edge technology, ingenuity and partnerships to identify, analyse and disrupt threats. Working with our intelligence partners MI5 and MI6, we protect the UK from terrorism, cyber-attacks and espionage. At GCHQ you’ll do varied and fascinating work in a supportive and inclusive environment that puts the emphasis on teamwork.

The Role

As a Senior Cyber Security Analyst, you’ll be key to protecting our organisation against a range of cyber threats. Your responsibilities include investigating high-priority alerts, analyzing logs and network traffic, monitoring security alarms, creating detection content, using threat intelligence, and responding to breaches. You will lead efforts to streamline processes, mentor junior analysts, and support digital forensics and security incidents. Staying updated with the latest cybersecurity tools and techniques is essential, along with reviewing past alerts and prioritizing incidents.

About You

You should have a background in cyber security analysis and a passion for IT. Experience with host intrusion detection analysis and a solid understanding of Windows and Linux OS are preferred. A minimum of 6 months experience as a Cyber Security or SOC Analyst is required. You should be comfortable working independently and collaboratively, with strong communication and problem-solving skills.

Training and Development

We support your growth through internal and external training, industry-recognized qualifications like SANS and CISSP, and opportunities to attend conferences. Travel opportunities are infrequent and not mandatory.

Rewards and Benefits

Starting salary of £44,044 plus benefits such as 25-30 days annual leave, employee recognition schemes, interest-free season ticket loans, pension scheme, cycle to work, on-site facilities, and parental leave.

Equal Opportunities

We value diversity and inclusion, encouraging applications from underrepresented groups. More details are available on our website.

Disability Confident

GCHQ is a Disability Confident Leader, committed to fair recruitment practices for disabled applicants, with support available during the process.

What to Expect

The recruitment process includes an application sift, virtual interviews, and a conditional offer, taking approximately 6-9 months including vetting. Successful candidates must pass each stage.

Before You Apply

You need to be a British citizen or hold dual British nationality and obtain Developed Vetting (DV) security clearance. Consider practicalities such as residence in the UK, application security, and the no-recreational-drugs policy. The role is based in Cheltenham, with no relocation support. Applications from outside the UK are not accepted.

Right to Withdraw

The closing date may be brought forward once sufficient applications are received. Submit early to avoid missing out.
