Senior Customs Duties and Indirect Tax Advisor

A leading global trading group with extensive operations across the commodities sector is seeking a Customs Duties and Indirect Tax Advisor to join its London-based tax team. This is a high-profile role in a dynamic international environment, providing crucial advisory support to trading desks and ensuring compliance across a complex network of jurisdictions.

The Opportunity

Reporting to the Head of Tax, this role offers the chance to work within a global trading business, providing strategic and practical guidance on customs duties, excise, VAT, and related indirect tax matters. The position involves liaising closely with trading and commercial teams, as well as external advisors and customs authorities, across the EMEA region and beyond.

Key Responsibilities

• Advising trading desks on indirect tax and customs duty implications of transactions across multiple jurisdictions
• Ensuring compliance with global customs, VAT, and excise regulations, with a particular focus on EMEA
• Monitoring changes in relevant legislation, including FTAs and rules of origin
• Supporting trading operations with customs clearance, classification, and documentation
• Managing relationships with customs authorities and external advisors
• Implementing risk mitigation strategies relating to customs and indirect tax exposures
• Delivering internal training and guidance to operational teams

• Candidate Profile

  • 10–15 years of experience in customs and indirect tax, ideally in the commodities or trading sector
  • Strong knowledge of international trade regulations, customs procedures, and VAT
  • EMEA exposure essential
  • Comfortable advising both commercial teams and regulatory bodies
  • CTA qualified (or equivalent), though QBE candidates with strong experience will also be considered
  • Proactive, commercially-minded, and capable of working independently
