Job Summary

The GKN Fokker Elmo Research & Technology (R&T) department seeks an ambitious Senior Research Engineer/Specialist to apply their theoretical knowledge to developing future Electrical (Wiring) Interconnection Systems for sustainable aircraft. Electrical Wiring Interconnection Systems (EWIS) are becoming increasingly vital as part of the journey towards fully electric aircraft. GKN Aerospace, including GKN Fokker Elmo, is pioneering cryogenic electrical power systems for Hydrogen-electric aircraft.

What you'll do

This is a full-time role within the R&T department at Fokker Elmo, part of GKN Aerospace. You will work within a European consortium involving cryogenic build & test companies, universities, knowledge institutes, and aerospace firms, developing the first Hydrogen-electric aircraft propulsion system. Your responsibilities include establishing requirements, performing conceptual and detailed design, managing partners/suppliers, and verifying cryogenic-electrical aerospace products through testing.

You will report to the Technology Team Lead. The department currently has 10-15 technologists, expanding to 20-25. The work location is at the GKN Fokker Aerospace site in Papendrecht, The Netherlands.

What you'll bring

Knowledge, experience, and qualifications:

  • Bachelor/Master in Engineering or Physics related to cryogenics or superconductivity
  • Experience in designing and assembling cryostats, including laboratory testing and verification
  • Familiarity with electrical power distribution concepts
  • Experience with multi-physics modelling (ANSYS, COMSOL)
  • Experience in safety and risk analyses of cryogenic systems
  • Requirements definition & management experience
  • Design verification experience, including testing and analysis

Skills:

  • Ability to apply cryogenic engineering principles to electrical interconnection systems in aircraft design
  • Capability to operate within a multi-national consortium and oversee activities of partners/suppliers
  • Process identification and definition from requirements to prototypes
  • Self-starter with good communication skills
