Title and Summary
Senior Counsel, Privacy & Data Protection Overview
- Mastercard is committed to balancing innovation while ensuring legal compliance and has embraced privacy and data protection as core to its business strategy. Mastercard has established a world-class privacy program and is expanding its global team.
- The Senior Counsel will lead the development of innovative technologies from a privacy and data protection perspective, monitor legislative developments, and ensure compliance of Commercial (Corporate) solutions with relevant privacy and data laws.
- This role reports to the Senior Managing Counsel, Privacy & Data Protection, and is part of the Global Privacy & Data Protection team.
- The candidate should be able to think strategically and tactically, aligning business objectives with legal compliance, and stay updated on new technologies related to payments and digital tech.
Role Responsibilities
- Analyze Commercial (Corporate) solutions to identify process and infrastructure requirements for compliance with global privacy laws.
- Develop contractual structures addressing privacy requirements and negotiate privacy clauses in agreements with partners, vendors, and clients.
- Monitor legislative and regulatory developments, engage with policymakers, and advise business units on legal impacts.
- Support privacy and business teams daily and perform privacy assessments in line with Mastercard policies.
- Enhance awareness among business clients and legal teams through training and initiatives.
Qualifications and Skills
- Law degree and bar membership (if applicable); additional qualifications like an LLM are a plus.
- Proven expertise in privacy and data protection laws, with knowledge of GDPR, CCPA, and similar frameworks.
- Understanding of digital technologies and familiarity with financial services and payment processing industries.
- Excellent time management, organizational, analytic, and communication skills.
- Strong interpersonal skills, relationship building, and ability to motivate teams.
