Job description

We are recruiting on behalf of an established engineering and manufacturing organisation seeking an experienced Senior Controls Software Engineer to join its engineering team.

Job Title: Senior Controls Software Engineer

Location: Dugannon
Salary: £55,000 - £65,000 DOE
Contract: Full‑Time, Permanent

This is an excellent opportunity to join a well‑established engineering business working on sophisticated vehicle technologies across conventional, hybrid, electric and autonomous systems. You'll have the opportunity to take ownership of controls development from initial concept through to real‑world vehicle testing and implementation.

This is a hands‑on development role working across engine, hybrid and electric vehicle platforms, covering the full controls lifecycle from initial concept and software architecture through to integration, testing and validation. The successful candidate will work with a broad range of systems including ECUs, motors, drives, engines, actuators, energy storage systems and sensors, alongside emerging autonomous technologies and auxiliary vehicle systems.

The Role

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Translating vehicle functionality requirements into functional software specifications and software architectures using CoDeSys and Danfoss PLUS+1.
  • Developing control strategies for engine, hybrid and electric vehicle applications.
  • Defining electronic systems and selecting appropriate hardware platforms.
  • Developing robust ECU communications using SAE J1939, CAN, CANopen and Ethernet.
  • Developing embedded control systems using MATLAB, Simulink and Stateflow.
  • Reading and interpreting electronic schematics, wiring diagrams and component datasheets.
  • Applying model-based design and rapid prototyping techniques.
  • Integrating system diagnostics and remote monitoring capabilities.
  • Following structured software development processes, including the V‑Model and functional safety principles.
  • Supporting multiple engineering projects and producing software development time plans.
  • Carrying out vehicle‑level testing, including HIL and SIL testing, fault insertion and functional validation.
  • Using vehicle interface and diagnostic tools including Vector CANalyzer and CANfox.
  • Supporting prototype vehicle development and testing in workshop and field environments.
  • Supporting engineering investigations including FMEA, 8D, risk assessments and cause‑and‑effect analysis.
  • Promoting software reuse and standardisation across different vehicle platforms.
What We're Looking For
  • Degree in Electronic Engineering, Software Engineering or a related discipline, or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum 5 years' experience within an OEM, Tier 1 or similar engineering environment.
  • Experience within automotive, on‑highway, off‑highway, mobile machinery or vehicle systems.
  • Strong embedded software, controls or systems engineering experience.
  • Proficiency with CoDeSys, MATLAB, Simulink and Stateflow.
  • Experience taking electronic systems from concept through integration, testing and delivery.
  • Strong knowledge of CAN, SAE J1939, CANopen and/or Ethernet.
  • Understanding of functional safety and V‑Model software development.
  • Experience with HIL and SIL testing.
  • Vehicle‑level system integration and validation experience.
  • Familiarity with Vector CANalyzer, CANfox or similar diagnostic tools.
  • Experience with FMEA, 8D and risk assessments.
  • A practical, hands‑on approach to prototype development and vehicle testing.
