EY is on the lookout for Senior Consultants with strong market Abuse and trade surveillance background, to join our Financial Crime Consulting team within the UK Financial Services Consulting business. As financial markets become more complex, firms must enhance their surveillance frameworks to detect and mitigate market abuse risks effectively.

The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in trade surveillance, market abuse regulation, and financial crime risk management along with core consulting, advisory or operational experience, and will play a pivotal role in guiding our clients through strategic and operational change. Our market abuse and surveillance team within the Financial Crime practice is experiencing increasing demand from our clients and is looking for experienced professions to join our team.

Market integrity is key to a well-functioning capital markets economy, enabling growth for businesses and investors. However, threats to this integrity are regularly posed from criminals seeking to abuse financial markets, cheating the markets through insider dealing or attempting to manipulate other market participants. At EY we support our clients to maintain market integrity through identifying, preventing and managing market abuse risks. Our team are at the forefront of global approaches to surveillance across markets through the review, implementation and operation of trade, order and communications monitoring.

Market abuse risks are evolving, and firms need to balance regulatory compliance, operational efficiency, and technological advancements. Our clients require innovative solutions to strengthen their trade surveillance frameworks, calibrate detection models, and respond to regulatory scrutiny

Your key responsibilities

  • Assess clients' Market Abuse frameworks, policies, systems, and controls against regulatory requirements, expectations, and industry best practices, identifying gaps and areas for enhancement.
  • Support engagement planning, management, and delivery, including leading specific workstreams within market abuse engagements and ensuring high-quality outcomes
  • Work as part of a team to create valuable and practical insights for our clients, adapting methods and practices to fit their business needs
  • Provide input into the development of innovative solutions to address complex market abuse risks, regulatory challenges, and surveillance enhancements, helping clients meet global compliance expectations.
  • Assist with the formulation of detailed reports and recommendations, ensuring findings are clear, actionable, and aligned with regulatory expectations.
  • Support client bids and business development opportunities, contributing to proposals, thought leadership, and market abuse-focused campaigns.
  • Contribute to the development of market abuse solutions, tools, and go-to-market strategies, leveraging industry insights and emerging regulatory trends.
Skills and attributes for success
  • Strong understanding of trade surveillance and market abuse risks across different financial instruments.
  • knowledge of UK MAR, MiFID II, FCA expectations, ESMA guidance, and global market abuse regulations.
  • Experience with surveillance technologies and vendor solutions
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to assess risk scenarios, detect patterns, and interpret surveillance data effectively.
  • Experience in Market Abuse Risk Assessment (MARA) execution, surveillance model calibration, and alert triage processes.
  • Ability to work with stakeholders at all levels, including compliance officers, front-office personnel, regulators, and technology teams.
  • Consulting and advisory experience, with a structured and solution-oriented approach to tackling market abuse challenges.
  • Strong communication and presentation skills, with the ability to articulate complex surveillance concepts to senior stakeholders.
  • Learning agility, being quick to learn and apply new knowledge and skills, and willing to continuously develop professionally
  • Comfortable with change and able to adjust strategies and approaches in dynamic environments
  • Skilled in time management, and proficient at managing multiple tasks and priorities efficiently to meet deadlines
To qualify for the role you must have some or all of the following:
  • Experience in market abuse surveillance, compliance, or financial crime risk management within a bank, asset manager, trading firm, or consulting practice.
  • Functional knowledge of trade surveillance systems, detection methodologies, and regulatory reporting requirements.
  • Prior experience conducting STOR investigations, regulatory risk assessments, or surveillance framework enhancements.
  • Understanding of FCA Market Watch publications and best practices for surveillance effectiveness.
  • A strong academic background, preferably in finance, risk management, or a related discipline.
  • A background in a Financial Crime advisory or first line operational role within the financial services industry and/or in a client facing consulting role
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to evaluate information and perspectives from multiple sources, and present information in a clear and concise manner
  • Sound technical knowledge of financial services businesses and products
  • Strong communication skills
  • The ability to work with a variety of stakeholders at all levels
  • A real desire to work as part of a team
  • Flexibility to travel and work full-time on assignments, as necessary
